the tips of the wings being curved upward? I know they've have small curves for a long time, but I just saw an American plane with some serious bend to the tips--probably four times higher than I've seen before.

We talkin bout wniglets? Increase fuel efficiency by recovering energy and reducing drag caused by wingtip vortices. Fuel effiecency increased by about 3.5% or more, big money in aviation. The new ones are called scimitar winglets and can offer an even bigger increase in fuel savings:
