Re: Mio and area Doings
BTW, I don't know if Dickfist is getting at this, but in the 60's King Salmon, or chinook were planted in the great lakes and it probably put about 10 billion dollars into the charter business/hotel/tourist stuff. Then Zebra muscles etc pulled key nutrients from the lake. Didn't kill the King off directly, but the alewife went bye bye. I remember lifeguarding on Lake Michigan in the 80's. We'd come down to the beach and we'd need a bull dozer to get the alewifes off the sand on various days. That stuff is long gone. No more alewife, but that's the feeder for the chinook. So........ cycle of life interupted.
I'm not a big fisherman, not a fly guy at all, both in fish and life. But friends have always bitched about this and that and the problems of zebra muscles etc. Always was an interesting topic. Really effects the economy of Michigan.

did you just use the word "orientates"?
Hell, I don't know. I'm horrible when it coms to that stuff. Isn't it a third person type description of being orientated to your surroundings? I'm 56, I get to use wrong words now. People just shrug it off and say "he's old".
I get kinda picky about stuff like that.. I don't know why.

O.K. fuckers, you made me look this shit up.
Orientate is standard in British English, you orientate something when you point it in a particular direction, hence orientated. In American English, you orient something, hence oriented. englishplus.com/grammar suggests it is more widely accepted in the UK than in the US but should be avoided in formal writing.

I fish for Kings every so often. You mentioned the zebra mussels, but they've actually been reduced due to the quaga mussel, which is an even more efficient filter of biomass. In recent years, the DNR has reduced salmon stocking with the intent of taking pressure off the alewife population and hoping for a rebound. Time will tell if this approach works, but salmon fishing results in the rivers have been down the last couple seasons.

The Topix thread on them is fascinating. It makes me curious where things stand today... particularly with the latest generation.

Re: Mio and area Doings
Went for a drive this morning to forage a bit in Amish country and stopped at Freddie's in Atlanta for a couple of their bargains. (1# packages of Bacon @ $0.99 each & Strawberries @ $1# were the main draw) Also they are always the cheapest anywhere up here for gas $2.87 this morning.
Anyway......I don't normally do this but when we pulled in i had to get a shot of this fella. Obviously he'd been in the sun for a while wearing a wife beater.
Taken with an ancient iPhone4 so excuse the quality.

Was out doing a little leg work this morning. Took the daughter, the mother and the grandkids with me. Stopped at Talley's for lunch then went to Twin Lake for a little beach time and swim. Damned Gorgeous day up here.
If any of you get the chance you should have a World Famous Talley burger before you die. 40 years on and they're still amazing.

lol, perhaps. EdMartin from TOB was in Talleys quite a bit, I know of a couple others over there that
have mentioned the burgers there. I'm sure I've seen them but not so sure on the beer sharing.

I went to Tallye's in 2000. Wanted to drink and have a little bar time. ordered a pizza. It tasted like it was straight out of the box. They kept the fluorescent lights on all night. Real ambiance, that place.
Nevermind. I'm talking about Walker's.
It's been 18 years.

Walker's is for sale right now - bowling lanes are still there. If I were 20 years younger I'd be tempted. But then again ifI were 20 years younger I'd already own the Northwoods. For sale for $90K including 5 acres and their softball field. I had many, many good weekends there in my youth.
The bar business up here has essentially been winnowed to those that serve good food. With the 21 year old drinking age, the increased enforcement of impaired driving and the smoking ban trying to make it selling drinks is a no go.

Maybe, but they are falsely advertising. That part of Michigan is not "God's Country". That name has always been reserved for Michigan's beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula.

That's an hour or so east of me but the chicken dinner at Iva's is nearly worth the $100. Much better than the chicken in 'Muth and they've been doing it longer.
Iva's Chicken Dinners, Sterling
On our search for Michigan's Best fried chicken, Iva's was the only place that still fried their chicken in cast iron skillets. And yes, they have a lot of them. The chicken is seasoned with just salt and pepper, gets a dredge of flour, and then 13 pieces are pan fried in vegetable oil. At one point, the cooks at Iva’s add a bit of water and a lid to finish it off.
We were told this is “Oklahoma” style chicken. It’s simple, classic, old fashioned chicken, with great notes of pepper, and a solid chickeny taste. Not too salty, it’s chicken the way your grandma used to make it. Real mashed potatoes, chicken gravy (with a biscuit floater!), sweet and sour cole slaw, stuffing and homemade biscuits round out your meal.
Free refills on everything make this an all you can eat meal not to miss.
