A recall has been issued on raw milk sold by North Texas distributor K-Bar Dairy over worries that some of the products contain a drug-resistant bacteria linked to fever, swelling, fatigue and other symptoms.
The small, family-operated dairy farm is in Wise County, about 40 miles northwest of Fort Worth and 60 miles northwest of Dallas. It produces around 120 gallons per day of raw milk, a type of milk that has not been pasteurized to kill harmful microorganisms.

A dairy that has a history of pathogen problems is recalling unpasteurized, raw milk because it has tested positive for E. coli, which can cause serious infections, especially in young children.

Owners of Spanish Sunrise Dairy in Yacolt, WA, posted the recall Tuesday. The recalled unpasteurized milk has a best-by date of Aug. 23, so there is concern that consumers may have unused portions of it in their homes.

But recently Duivenvoorden Farms opened a processing plant, a 760-square-foot building approved by the state that allows the business to sell its raw milk at retail stores. The milk is available at Country Organics on Bechelli Lane in Redding; S&S Organic Produce and New Earth Market, both in Chico; and Health Habit in Willows.

“It is legal in the state to sell raw milk this way but you have to have a processing plant and be approved by the state to do the processing,” Lori Duivenvoorden said. “Every batch of milk that we bottle goes out and gets tested. It’s a lot of testing, a lot of regulations.”
