CNN reports at least 7 police officers are shot in Baton Rouge: 3 dead, 4 in critical condition. America is so depressing far too often.

There was always a presumption that guns are only used to do good, or fight the bad. Well, unfortunately it's not nearly that clean. Guns are being used in any way the possessors of the guns choose. And nobody can stop them.

Of course not! I am totally for gun and truck ownership! Same for baseball bats, tennis racket, sharp objects found in the kitchen, shoes, underwear...

We can't have government restricting our rights to everything. Too much government is the real enemy here.

I don't see it that way. Vlad is correct. We live in a free society where guns are cool. They are also cool for the wrong reason for the right people.

Better mental health is the only answer. The sooner we start screening 320 million Americans for mental health, the sooner we can fix this so called "gun problem".

Who will pay the cost associated with screening 320 million Americans? I don't know, we'll figure that out later. Maybe the gun lobby can pay for it since this is their big idea. Or maybe we can just increase everyone's taxes, I hear gun owners are big on higher taxes as well.

Actually, it would probably make more sense to only do screening for those people who want to buy guns, but the gun lobby will never go for that, so I guess that's a nonstarter.

In any case, I am all for more guns, and for presuming that 320 million Americans are mentally ill, or at least need to be checked.

Dead Baton Rouge shooter attacked police on his birthday

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The deceased suspect in the deadly shooting of Baton Rouge law enforcement officers appeared to have attacked police on his 29th birthday, CBS News has learned.

The suspect has been identified as a black male named Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri, sources tell CBS News. He was born on July 17, 1987.

One suspect was killed and two others might still be at large, Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, previously said. However, Louisiana state police said Sunday afternoon there is "no active shooter" in Baton Rouge.

Really, way more black people are killed by heart disease than are murdered by anyone. We shouldn't bother trying to solve any other problems until that one is solved.
