The Chess Thread
I haven't played live in years - my kids and I stopped playing when they were teens.
I used to play competitively and enjoyed it. Playing online got to be a bummer when
people started using programs to beat you. Thought it might be fun to have a thread
for some problems/discussions.
Here's a pretty easy one.

I see two, but not one: bishop on the queen, queen takes pawn. Been forever since I played. My old man was a master or some shit.

Never mind. I didn't see the other bishop, he has the corner covered. Second move not needed.

New York chess hustlers get pwned by Magnus
10/19/2016 – No, it's not a typo! Background: there is vigorous chess activity in New York's Washington State Park, and plenty of hustling going on there. Sometimes, though, someone turns up who is really, really strong. And then the hustlers get owned. A viral video shows this happening recently: World Champion Magnus Carlsen took a detour to the park, watched his manager get "crushed" and then, with Liv Tyler watching, proceeded to restore the honour of Norwegian chess.

Re: The Chess Thread
Been forever. A few questions. Is the king the large crown, or the smaller one with the cross?
What exactly are you asking? In one move how many times can the white pieces mate the black, or vice versa?

Queen is the large crown.
King has the small cross.
White has one move to checkmate the black King (win).

Move the bishop on the left, two spots diagonally to the right. Should be checkmate. I think.LooseGoose wrote:InTenSity wrote:Been forever. A few questions. Is the king the large crown, or the smaller one with the cross?

Yep, I'll look for a couple harder ones tonight.

White: Rook to f8
Black: Bishop to f8, takes rook

Any more brain busters?

Right idea, wrong sequence.
d1-d8+ BxR
f1-f8++
D8 isn't even check since the bishop is sitting on f8 in your sequence and you would end up mated.
f1-f8+ BXR
d1-d8 e4-e1++

Yep, I figured you'd typed it wrong. And I was wrong on the mate for you since you could block with the Rook.
I'll look for some better ones today/tonight.

Re: The Chess Thread
My daughter just started taking a chess class after school. Never played in my life, but am trying to learn so that I can play her. An after school chess club used to be the thing of the biggest nerds, but schools have really been pushing it as an education tool. There are some schools down here where it's part of the regular curriculum.

We had a small club in HS and played tournaments all over the state. IT was about 1/2 nerds and 1/2 jocks, we had a lot of fun.
I grew up playing my Dad and the biggest adjustment for me was the clock. I'd never played on one before so Dad bought one and we started using it, that made it a bit easier. At one time I was a decent player but I've not played 10 full games in the last 15 years.

Might be fun. My Dad played mail chess when I was growing up. He'd have 10-12 games going at a time, it's hard to imagine that in today's age.
Looks like some people still do it....

so did my dad. He had a little leather pocket chess book and would send his next move via mail. I mentioned before he was some sort of Master, but never made Grand Master. I don't know how that shit works, but he was in the top 2000s back in the 80s. He quit playing tournaments in the 90s and took up pool. We played all the time as when I was a kid, but never got into it. I would get my ass kicked but would play if we set something up online.

I've always been terrible at chess. I get too caught up in trying to take pieces, rather than thinking about how to corner the king.

I'll leave it for a day, I know Nordy looks at these too.
Ooops....forgot about the spoiler box.
- Spoiler:
- H4-H6 Black is forced to PxR and then G6-G7++
OR Black can move the Bishop out.....and then it's RXP++
Once you move the R to H6 those are the only legal moves available to Black.

Castle has to take pawn to save king, then queen takes castle and it still isn't one move

That's a bishop on G8. If rook takes H7 bishop takes rook.
If pawn takes H7 bishop takes pawn.
