Router suggestions
So I just moved to a new apartment and need to buy a router for wifi. Problem is, I don't know shit about this stuff and don't wanna get stuck with a dud. Any advice for a cheap and reliable router?

I have a trendnet. It's big and bulky and works. Fastest I've clicked is 60 or so mb/ps.

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router
It's only wireless G, but it's still fast enough. There's a reason they've been making this for like 11 years. You can't kill it. It will not wear out and die.
11 years later, the Linksys WRT54GL is still among the most popular routers

Have had this Netgear for 4-5 years, I think.

Has worked great. No issues.

Had this. Had all kinds of problems. Two routers later I have a Netgear R6250 and every problem I've ever had with my network has gone away.
Don't really think it's cheap but with all the issues I've had over the years with other routers, I'd pay $500 for something that just works, no questions asked. This was a lot less than that.

Can any of these be used in place of the wireless modem I got from the place that supplies me with internet? I've got dsl so it's not that fast to start with and the range is about 30 feet off their crappy modem.

Re: Router suggestions
Always need a modem.
Only option is to get an all in one modem / router.
Don't like those because of one breaks you're buying both.

The R6250 is same as the link I posted. Have had good luck with Netgear stuff since buying hubs/switches when I use to do internal IT at an old place of employment.WhiteBoyHatcher wrote:Floyd Robertson wrote:Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router

More covid cases at work. Started working from home again today. VPN is really slow, especially with larger files, and thinking I need a new router.
Router suggestions? Preferably under $300. Partial to Netgear but will consider other brands.

I got a TP Link AX3000... the PC gamer kid never complains, so it must be super fast. I haven't noticed any poor performance that didn't directly have to do with my provider.

TP-Link Deco Mesh WiFi System(Deco M5).
I upgraded our router to a 3 hub mesh router right before the kids started online school last year. I can mow my entire yard streaming music over the wifi.

Heat and someone else suggested the Google nest. I’ve had an issue here or there but I think it had to do with our provider rather than the nest

Can't wait for Amazon delivery and need to pick something up tomorrow. Most NG/Nighthawk routers I've been looking at are not available locally at Bestbuy or Microcenter.

That joke was played earlier in the thread. Sold my dad's Craftsman router to a co-worker for like $20 many years ago and bought a nice Porter Cable plunge router/kit/table, which I've also since sold.Jake from State Farm wrote:Craftsman makes good routers.

Re: Router suggestions
Just recently switched from Frontier to T-Mobile Home Internet. The router I had from Frontier was probably 4 or 5 years old. They sent me a box to send it back to them. Box was way oversized for the router so I just crammed it full of plastic bags for padding. I'm assuming they're now trying to save every penny they can while in bankruptcy, except of course on shipping charges since it was prepaid.

HellifIknow. Wife does the mowing and it's not yet mowing season anyway. It is set up through. Have had some speed issues but supposedly that's from Tmobile upgrading the nearest tower to 5g

Re: Router suggestions
Got the nighthawk up and running. Tested opening some large work files and they're back up to speed. It's weird because I worked from home a couple weeks ago and the speed was fine with the old router. Seems it took a shit between then and now. Not a full dump because it worked, just slowed down.

But how well does it stream Last Man Standing? Does it buffer? Is it even available for streaming? Not sure it’s core audience understands that technology, you know, since they watch network sitcoms.
