Grand Theft Avocado
3 Produce Workers Stole $300,000 Worth of Avocados
Imagine going to prison for avocado theft.
Fencing one avocado at a time doesn't seem like a great business plan.

I work with a guy who knew those guys.
At some point in the next week to ten days there is a very good chance your grocers won't have avocado on the shelf. If they do, most likely they will be around $2 each.

http://www.freshplaza.com/article/9040581/mexico-the-avocado-from-michoacan-could-miss-the-super-bowl/A week ago, producers of avocado stopped harvesting and consequently selling avocado to the packing companies that market the product, as a form of protest and to demand they be paid a fair price for this product.
After a week of conflict, the entire avocado sector in Michoacan is in crisis, as the work stoppage affects 16,800 direct jobs and more than 70,000 temporary jobs, reported avocado growers and packers.
In addition to the damage to the families that grow avocado, the sector has had losses of 60 million pesos a day, as they have been unable to export 3,000 tons of avocados a day to the United States.

Re: Grand Theft Avocado
One truck load of avocados is worth $125k right now.
You're retail prices are going to skyrocket or be from Peru, which will take forever to ripen.
It would help me happy if you guys that shop at Meijer start to complain about the fruit from mission or calavo.

I always let the cashier know that it’s fucking bullshit and that the only reason I grabbed them is so that I could take them to the register and not buy them so that they would have to put them back.

Re: Grand Theft Avocado
Mexican cartels threatened the family of a usda employee. Said employee invoked safety protocols and pulled all usda workers out of packing sheds in Mexico. In order to ship Avocados to the US, they have to be certified by the USDA. If this situation is not resolved Avocados will start to disappear off the shelf. Prices were already historically high, and now they'll be higher.

Re: Grand Theft Avocado
They are, but this is really early in the season and there isn't enough in California to cover the whole US. If this is resolved this week, there shouldn't be any issues. That being said it's too badpeople wouldn't pay more to have cartel free Avocados. My company is often told we're not competitive, but I'm sure we ship the correct size and aren't involved with cartels. The Pantry wrote:Aren't they also grown in CA? I know a guy in New Mexico who can get cartel avocados over the border into the US. We can use his chicken restaurant as a home base, with extensive use of his delivery trucks.

Considering how talented he is, we should all know about that guy. He should be on Colbert or The View.
