ND vs MSU Rivalry
Read in the LSJ the two teams aren't set to play again until 2026?
My vote is to just cut the tradition with ND and to move on permanently.

Have you seen our 2019 home schedule?
My vote is to get back to playing every year if our alternative is marquee games against Arizona State.

Those days are done. I'd move towards getting a rivalry going with a PAC team or a good 1-1 series. I've always liked MSU vs the Ducks.

Re: ND vs MSU Rivalry
Either get a bunch of good home and home series lined up so we either have a home game against an interesting team or Michigan and osu every other year or just schedule notre dame. Not doing either, like they did in 2019, is a terrible option.steveschneider wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:Have you seen our 2019 home schedule?

I've always thought a home/home with Auburn would be fun.. two traditionally strong programs with agricultural backgrounds.. a national perception (fair or unfair) of being in the shadow of the "other" school in the state..

Frankly, as a season ticket holder, I don't really give a fuck. When they ask me to shell out that money for a trash heap of a home schedule "aw shucks we tried but it didn't work out give us money anyway" doesn't really go very far.
Besides, it's not just notre dame. It's Rutgers. It's Maryland. It's no Wisconsin or Nebraska. It's accepting that every other year will have um and osu and every other won't and not having some alternative decent game in those years. (psu just doesn't move the needle enough.) I don't know man. It's just frustratingly shitty if you go to the games. If you don't then I suppose you probably wouldn't care as much.

I've been kinda spoiled the last 20+ years living within walking distance to campus. I can pick and choose games I might wanna go to.. if I decide not to go to the game and the weather is nice, I'll spend some time on campus, walk back home, take a nap, watch of the game, etc.Travis of the Cosmos wrote:I'm aware of the phrase. I rarely think of the folks who might commit to an entire season and the way that impacts potentially their entire weekend, the cost incurred, the possibility of bad weather, etc - I know if it's important enough to some folks, none of this matters. But as an old(er) dude with only a casual interest in most things, it's nice to be able to sort of pick and choose what I feel like doing. Thankfully I have that option - I understand a lot/most don't.

I wish it was still the Big Ten and we played a true round robin schedule in FB & BB, but alas.

I wouldn't schedule a series with anybody who is an upper level conference player in a major conference. There is no reward. Win the big ten and go to the playoff. Don't post a loss to the likes of Virgina Tech just because fans want a Sept boner.

Re: ND vs MSU Rivalry
Competitively you're right and that is not good for the sport. I actually preferred the BCS to the playoff. A) there was incentive for playing tough games B) winning the big ten and going to the rose bowl was still pretty great. Even if you lose that game against a good team, your team has more experience and there's still a light at the end of the tunnel, that game actually serves you well for later though games. With the playoff, the smartest thing to do is just coast to undefeated playing as weak a schedule as possible. You'll get in, more often than not in those circumstances (going undefeated is tough regardless, there's no reason to make it harder on yourself.)kingstonlake wrote:I wouldn't schedule a series with anybody who is an upper level conference player in a major conference. To bobs point- yeah I don't think paying for season tickets really makes sense anymore, at least in the shitty off years. Right now we have a bunch of seats together, which is the downside. But you don't have to go to all of them and you can go for a lot cheaper when you do.

I agree with you, but the times have changed. If ND doesn't want it fuck them, and let's cut out our bball series with them too. Notre Dame isn't exactly the mighty powerhouse they used to be. I'd probably be just as happy if we could establish something with a PAC 10 team. I also agree with Travis of the Cosmos that diluted schedules are a problem.

But scheduling a non-conference game in Week 1 or 2 and losing really has no negative effect on the season so long as you win out, which you kind of have to do anyway. For example, Ohio State lost to Va Tech the same day we lost to Oregon a few years ago and they made it to playoffs. Just gotta win the conference division and your conference champ game and you're in.
Except for Penn State.

Non-Conference games
2017 - Bowling Green, Western, Notre Dame
2018 - Utah State, @ Arizona St, Central
2019 - Tulsa, Western, Arizona St
2020 - @ BYU, Toledo, Miami (the U)
2021 - @ Miami (the U)
2022 - @ Boise St
2023 - Boise St
2024 - @ Boston College
2025 - Boston College
2026 - Notre Dame (TBA, site)
2027 - Notre Dame (TBA, site)
Obv after 2020 the non-Power 5 games still need to be scheduled/negotiated
I would love to see a MAC, a PAC and BIG 12 game (but that won't happen)

I'd say you're probably right most of the time but you are putting yourself in the one loss pool and we know how politics starts to play a role at that point. Schedule a mid level power five. Win it. With PSU, OSU, and scum in our division that's enough chops to get in with wins over them.

Maybe, but based on that, um should've cut ties during our long droughts in football and basketball. ND is and always will be a regional rival for us, regardless of their status as a national player.

Re: ND vs MSU Rivalry
Fuck Notre Dame - they had their chance to join the B1G but they think their shit doesn't stink, and now they turned the ACC into their bitches (monetarily speaking).
Playing against the Irish is no longer scheduling a tough opponent, nor is it opening doors to regional recruiting; IMO it is a tradition that goes back to before MSU was in the Big Ten and how well Notre Dame treated the program in the 40's and 50's and supported the effort for the Spartans to join the conference.
But that is ancient history, let some 80 year old alums wax poetic about that shit.
tl:dr - Fuck Notre Dame

I don't think that scheduling a tough OOC necessarily hurts anyone anymore. If anything it probably strengthens things. Teams still need to go through their conference and then win the conference championship game. Where they fucked up, was trying to put a square peg in a round hole. 5 main conferences and only room for 4 teams? Just make it 8 teams, the 5 conference champions, 1 from non power conference and 2 At large. People can bitch about the 2 at large teams, but whatever, you either guarantee you're going because you win the conference, or don't.

Maybe. Honestly nigel I think you're overrating people's tolerance of these shitty schedules. It's easy for you to say from afar where the difference between a home and a road game is the color of the uniforms. Even this year, while most people kept some amount of tickets, I know a lot of people that went from having 8 season tickets to having 4 or 2. 2019 is even worse. I think there's going to be a lot more people choosing to stay home.NigelUno wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:
