It seems Nigel is disregarding the attendance across college football going down- as well as the interest in the sport in general.

I think our fan base has consistently supported the program regardless of record or home schedule for a long time.

Is that all from crappy home schedules? Because I think that's the topic.
And has MSU attendance gone down?

Yeah we have. But that was back when we had games against Michigan or Wisconsin or Ohio state or notre dame every single year. Not Tulsa and Arizona state and Maryland. Which brings us back to how we got to this point in the conversation.NigelUno wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:

Ohio State hasn't been on our schedule every year (until recently). And I don't think Wisconsin has been either. And weren't there years we skipped ND?

Sorry, what I meant is that we'd have at the very least 1 of those four, if not two or three, every year. And if not it was a one off weird thing (I don't know if it ever happened in the past, but im just covering for when you point out 1969 or some other random year where we played none of those at home.) Now we face every other year being kind of shitty. The watering the leagues down for money thing has made the product worse, while they try to get more and more out of you for tickets and parkingNigelUno wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:

You don't go to the games do you goose? I've said this a few times now, but until I get a fellow season ticket holder to tell me that I'm 100% off base here, your criticism, and that of others who don't attend, is noted. But it's real easy to do that from Mio where, again, it doesn't make a bit of difference where the game is played.LooseGoose wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote: The watering the leagues down for money thing has made the product worse, while they try to get more and more out of you for tickets and parking

Note- proooobably not that of DUFFY either whose SPARTAN status is not to be questioned. We know man. You'll go to every game ever, stay til the end, and pay a never ending amount to do so no matter if every single game is against Wayne State.

I don't go to many games. Perhaps 1 per year. Never got in the habit, always worked long hours including weekends.
You mention "my criticism" - I've not criticized you at all. Methinks your martyrdom wish is making you see the non-existent.
Many sports are in the process of killing/wounding their Golden Geese. It's my opinion that rights fees have peaked, the ride down will be interesting.
It's your $$, spend it as you wish. Bitching on message boards will accomplish nothing. Actually withholding your cash will bite harder.
Use that $$ to explore the State and experience new places and adventures, add more spice to your life. Help small businesses that need your $$ and will work to make you happy.

I agree with goose - there are much better places to spend your $ and every Saturday in MI. Then again, there are what - 7 home games? If I was in Michigan, I'm probably going to the "Big" games and that's it.

Bitching can accomplish something though. I'm still wavering on if I'm actually going to stop going or not. I don't want to. Not by any means. But it seems almost silly to keep doing if they really are going to put that slop up there and ask me to pay full price (when another not mentioned option is going to all over those games for like 1/4th the money.)

I'm pretty much done. Starting 2019 it's only one or two big games per year. So, I'll do the next 12 or 13, but it will be a dramatic drop off from that point. TV's are great. So are weekends at home or the cottage.

Re: ND vs MSU Rivalry
On a related note and to prove I can give advice to improve everyone's life...lol...
I recall reading a post from WBH lamenting not being able to use his cooker so much because of the changing tailgate locations, rules, groups or whatever.
At the time I thought to myself why limit yourself to MSU games? We know he loves to cook, he's obviously a bit competitive - why not enter some weekend cooking competitions for shits and grins if nothing else? If you find that's not for you volunteer to cook as a fundraiser for the Scouts or some other local kids organization as a way to give a little back while indulging your hobby? You'd be a hero to many cash strapped groups and who doesn't like being hailed a bit? In many ways they would be more thankful than 20 drunks at a tailgate.
I guess the moral of the story as always is that if you don't like wtf is going on the easiest thing to change is what you're doing rather than bitch about what the other guy is doing.

There is, unfortunately as usual, more to it than the scheduling. It's really a conversation for two springs from now anyway.
But yeah, college football was better when winning the big ten mattered. The playoff sucks. End of rant.

I'm not bashing anyone here with this comment. I'm tagging on to Loose's comment about essentially finding another outlet for your pastimes in a slightly off tangent way.
I learned a valuable lesson from a man named Dr. John Izzo (he is not a relative of Tom that he knows of, I asked..) To paraphrase his message, don't make excuses or put up a fuss for things that are out of your control, even though they may be a valid reason. Instead, focus on the things you can control. He refers to it as 0/100. Take 100% responsibility for your actions and give 0% excuses, because excuses are negative energy and don't do anything to solve an issue.
Now, I'm probably veering way off base here, but this lesson was something that really resonated with me. Like everyone, I'm not perfect and occasionally break the 0%rule. But, I'm in Colorado and OTPT may be able to tell how much fun can be had in Colorado, if you know what I mean.
tl:dr - I'm in Colorado and sound like a wacko. Carry on.

See, you guys. The thing is not all of these things exist in a vacuum like you like to present them. Mostly I go to the games to spend time with a bunch of friends. Probably would have quit a long time ago without that. The thing is, well, the two things is that it's infinitely more fun to spend time with said friends when you're not doing it at a noon game against Tulsa or Maryland. The other thing is that the shitty scheduling is getting to a point when it might be worth it to give it up despite the benefits.Senior Dickfist wrote:I'm not bashing anyone here with this comment. It's not like I'm sitting here saying "man there is literally no benefit to keep going but I'm going to do it and bitch about it instead." Which is sort of how you and goose are framing it. It's the wrong way to frame it. There are benefits, but the negatives are starting to potentially outweigh the benefits and what you're witnessing is the inner decision making process to a decision that won't be made for 20 months anyway.

Travis, I totally understand and was hesitant about posting it because I didn't want to seem like I was attacking you. It was more of a food for thought that I have wanted to share, but never remotely had a situation that made sense and this still may not have been that time.
I completely see your side and I actually made the decision to stop attending games when the prices really increased. It wasn't that I didn't think it was fair, I just decided that there were other things that brought me more joy for the money.
Again, please don't think I'm attacking you. I'm just here for fun.

There are plenty of reasons people stop going to games. I'm guessing the "a lot" of people you know who gave up their tickets this year were more pissed about going 3-9 last year than the home schedule this year.

But, you've used examples of things that aren't true to make your point. OSU wasn't on our schedule every year. Neither was Wisconsin. Neither was ND.
Did you think about canceling your tickets in 2015? When none of your 4 big teams were on our home schedule? We had Oregon at home. That was it. What about 2013? When only UM was on the home schedule?
We have rarely had 3 big home games in your 10 years of tickets. Last year, and in 2008.
And you're not going to count Penn State as a big game this year?
Would you prefer to go back to when we didn't play OSU every year? Adding members to the Big Ten eventually put OSU in our division. We never played them every year before.

Re: ND vs MSU Rivalry
Yeah this is how a conversation with nigel usually goes.
Sigh. All right guy in Georgia. Let me answer the 50 questions you just asked me in rapid fire.
1) no we had Oregon
2) no we had um
3) I'm adding this question for you, yes to 2019 because it's just Arizona state and this shit isn't really that cheap and there isn't even one fun one.
4) I combined "when it was just Michigan?" into #2
5) again, nigel, I know you just had a big big hurricane so maybe your ears got hurt but as I've said, we at least have had 1. Never 0.
6) penn state- not really. Man I don't know. It just doesn't move the needle. I already said that. I can't explain it.
7) as I've said countless times, if it meant getting rid of Rutgers and Maryland and meant playing Wisconsin or Nebraska more, then yeah, in a fucking heartbeat. It's not about playing them every year, because again, for those of us not in Georgia the location actually matters. Watching on your tv, I can imagine that playing every year would be better.
I'll make this easy for you nigel. I only have one question. When was the last time you went to more than 2 home games in a season? Don't lie. Honestly, if you say anything sooner than 5 years I'm going to assume you're lying regardless. So prolly just go with 2011. And if it's more than that, honestly, your opinion really doesn't matter here man because you simply cannot relate to what I'm talking about. Thanks for the hot take from the Georgia super fan blog tho.

And if it's more than that, honestly, your opinion really doesn't matter here man because you simply cannot relate to what I'm talking about. Thanks for the hot take from the Georgia super fan blog tho.

This got me thinking - it's been a long time for me. I'd have to go look through the seasons but probably back when my kids were in HS and I'd take them and some friends to a game or two.
When I was in school I don't think I missed a home FB game. Went to a few BB games and nearly every home hockey game and probably 25% of the away hockey games. Had bunch of BaseBall players that I knew from the dorm so went to a fair number of their games. Even did some track meets as I knew some of that team from HS. Never attended any wrestling or swimming meets.
So I guess that made me a good fan when it was convenient to go.

5) again, nigel, I know you just had a big big hurricane so maybe your ears got hurt but as I've said, we at least have had 1. Never 0.
Actually, in 2015 we played 0 of those 4 teams at home.

But we did play Oregon nigel. Which, if you reference how this thread started, I said "either make sure you schedule a marquee game or just schedule notre dame because this not having anything stuff is bananas." Or something to that effect.NigelUno wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:

Did I hurt your feelings? By pointing out some inaccuracies?

So one marquee game was enough for you not to cancel your tickets. Got it. Thanks.

Huh?
I haven't questioned his fandom at all. Not once.

Yes nigel one would be great even more than one would be really great. Is that what you were trying to ask this whole time because I'm pretty sure I said that several times glad we could come to that solution for you thoughNigelUno wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:

Nigel you didn't point out any inaccuracies. You went out on a limb then you ride or died on that limb to keep pounding away thinking you were making a point. You weren't though. Sorry.NigelUno wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:Yeah this is how a conversation with nigel usually goes.

But again, in the event that you ever actually attend a home game, please stop by and let me know your thoughts on attending home games.
