I guess my hope was that they would trade to open the way for a rebuild. Open cap space, gather picks, etc.
Instead they sucked up cap space and gave away picks. So good for SVG in the short term, probably a disaster
for the franchise long term.

NBA teams should not trade draft picks unless they are one of the five teams with a shot

Griffin's contract is stupid. No way we should be taking that on. SVG's an idiot.

They essentially traded Griffin for Harris. Reed and Boban are back up bigs. Avery was expiring. The draft picks? Name one they've drafted recently that's made a difference.
Griffin is a superstar. Sure health's an issue. But Blake Griffin wouldn't give the Pistons the time of day in a free agent market scenario. But they got him in a trade. So now maybe, just maybe, it might make the Pistons a good landing spot for a top level free agent point guard with Drummond and Griffin in your front court.

Good post Kingston. Reggie was having a solid year before he went down, along with the entire team. I’m just concerned we lack shooters still.

How do you sign a FA when you're capped out?

Los Angeles Clippers Won Blake Griffin Trade Because Of His Contract
Blake Griffin is no longer a member of the Los Angeles Clippers.
The 28-year-old was traded to the Detroit Pistons on Monday, and while the Clippers didn’t get a whole lot in return, they should be happy with the deal. Griffin’s five-year, $171 million contract was an albatross that would have held the franchise back for years, and now it’s off the books for good.
Yes, the Clippers also got a 25-year-old wing having a career year in Tobias Harris, and a excellent defensive guard in Avery Bradley. But in reality, this deal was about removing a terrible contract from their ledger. I wrote this summer that Griffin’s deal was among the worst given out in free agency, and I still believe that.
Griffin’s deal will pay him $32 million next year, $34.4 million in 2019-20, $36.8 million in 2020-21 and he’ll have a player option for a ridiculous $38.96 million in 2021-22. That’s just an insane contract for a 28-year-old with a lengthy injury history who has likely peaked.
Griffin hasn’t been an All-Star or made an All-NBA team since 2015 and his PER has dropped to 20.70 this season, which ranks 34th in the NBA. Griffin’s PER ranks 10th among power forwards this year with guys like John Collins, Bobby Portis and teammate Montrezl Harrell outpacing him.

There's a chance the deal could make the Pistons better this year....but long term this is a bomb.

A- for the Pistons
A- for the Pistons
His addition creates a legitimate opportunity to make a run in an Eastern Conference that—until Cleveland decides what it wants to do in the next 10 days—appears open for the taking.
Pairing Griffin with Drummond creates a fairly intriguing spin on the Clippers’ longtime Griffin-Jordan pairing. Coupling Griffin’s inside-out game with the freakishly athletic Drummond, currently one of the league’s leading rebounders at age 24, should mean space for both to operate. Although Jordan is a superior rim protector, it’s often forgotten how good of a passer Drummond has become (he’s averaging a career-high 3.8 dimes) and that his free throw shooting has also markedly improved this season.

It's a league of superstars. Not they have one. Fill in the rest. This was always going to be a middling team they way it was trending. How exciting was that? Getting the 14th pick every year. Swing for the fences. I like it. Tobias Harris as your best player next year doesn't move the needle.

The problem is that you're thinking of the BG of the past not the future. The Pistons just bought his years of decline for an absurd price.

You have to factor in the the Pistons are in the East. A division that is be up for grabs when James moves to the West. Hell they may be throwing in the towel this year. The window is open. Go for it.

We'll see, it might work short term though only God knows who will play Guard. Long term there's no way to take the stink off the skunk.

#Pistons SVG trade history:
-- Morris/Bullock for 2020 2R pick
-- Harris for expiring Jennings/Ilyasova
-- Griffin for Harris/Bradley/Boban
Trades have worked out, for the most part.

Same. Obviously there’s a lot to be determined and it’s not a sure thing.. but you don’t get a sure thing from a shooting guard that was recently traded for nothing and is having a bad season, a fine small forward but by no means a Star, and a mid tier first rounder. I mean what do people think you can flip those type of assets into? I think it’s a worthy gamble to take. And yeah, maybe it doesn’t work and then we do what everyone is (foolishly) clamoring for, tanking, but I’m okay with taking a shot and seeing what happens.Other Teams Pursuing That wrote:The more i think about the trade the more i like it. No. Quite the contrary. I love Tobias. I’d love for him to come back somehow. But Blake is better. And Blake is better than him and an unknown first round pick, which is basically what the trade amounts to.LooseGoose wrote:Travis of the Cosmos wrote:

Pretty close in on the court terms. In that light it's not a bad deal but the salary cap issues and Griffin's age/health make the difference for me. We'll see.
