The mid-engine Corvette
My kid texted these pics yesterday. Said a GM friend sent them to him. First pics not on the proving grounds. They showed up on Jalopnik later.

The rear tire width hints it might be AWD. Would make perfect sense.

Why do they have a raincoat on it? It should be able to resist rain easily.

Can hardly wait for comparison road tests with the new Ford GT. No horse in the race but I'm betting on the Chevy.kingstonlake wrote:It's no Mustang.......

Yes. I don't think I've ever seen one of those on the road. Maybe I don't live in the right place? [shrug]

If I'm going to spend a half-mil on a car, it sure as hell won't be a Ford, no matter how cool it looks.
Sorry, Turtleneck.

Frankly, I'd have been shitting my pants if I was the Lamborghini guy in the passenger seat. My kid was 19 and only had his driver's license about 6 months at the time.y2kMgrad wrote:The Pantry wrote:Just the cheap ones.

Cost him about $200US to beat that thing. Well worth it.

What are the safety features of the GT, Turtleneck? How about conveniences? Does it comes with heated side mirrors? Can the cup holders keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold? What about the sound system? I like a good, clean, crisp sound on my drive to work--not just the low end. It's important to be able to enjoy the high end in music, too. Does it offer real time live traffic updates, or is that just another available option to jack up the price tag?

That 13mpg number will discourage many buyers.

Price does not matter to Swill posters, GreenWay. Again, not sure how you got through the front door.

Looks cool but why in the world would anyone pay 500k for a V6? Both the ZR1 and coming mid-engine Corvette will kick its ass for well less than half the price.Turtleneck wrote:

I'm sure its V6 is fun but V8 torque is proven more fun. Again, for probably a quarter of the price.StylesGShmooth wrote:The Pantry wrote:

ZR1's don't go on sale until next year as 2019 models. At this point in time I'd think they all get moved in closed Reliable trucks. Work on the same street as The GM Heritage Center and see them everyday. Would love to visit that place.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport So far, it's mostly a wheels-and-tires story.
2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport So far, it's mostly a wheels-and-tires story.
LONG-TERM TEST UPDATE: 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. “Nothing went wrong that was the Grand Sport’s fault. After two and a half months in the fleet, our blue Vette developed a moderate vibration at speed. We pulled the wheels and attempted to rebalance them, only to learn that all four wheels were bent. Michigan roads having taken their toll, we paid a wheel-repair specialist $480 to straighten three wheels.”

Re: The mid-engine Corvette
You left out the part about the 4th wheel...
With as shitty as the roads are in Michigan I'm betting most cars here with low profile tires are driving around on bent rims. There are some roads near me that I hate to drive even with 65 series SUV tires, including one I can't avoid on my way to work. Road became so bad last winter I was certain they'd fix it this summer. I was wrong.
Floyd knows what I'm talking about. Mound Road is a like a mine field between 14 Mile and M-59. Six miles of multi-lane 50 mph boulevard with heavy truck traffic. A contractor has been working on the SB lanes north of 18 Mile this summer but the city of Sterling Heights has done an extremely poor job maintaining the rest of the road. New holes have opened up even over the summer and the subsequent patching jobs are hideous. Planners and road work crews in Sterling Heights should be fired. If this winter has a couple freeze-thaw cycles the roadway will become a disaster.
The left-rear wheel was cracked and a replacement 12-by-20-inch wheel ran $619 at the dealer; feeling lazy, we also spent $20 to have the dealer swap the 25-series, run-flat tire because not having to muscle tires that big off and on a wheel is worth every bit of a couple of sawbucks.

Similar HP to the new ZR1 but short over 150 ft-lbs in torque. 20X the price.kingstonlake wrote:Poor mans Aston Martin one-77
My kid got a job as a porter at the Troy Jaguar-Aston Martin dealership a few summers ago. Wasn't like a Chevy-Ford-etc porter job. Would drive a Jag loaner out to the customer and drive whatever AM back to the shop for repairs. Sometimes hundreds of miles. Once drove to Toronto to pick up a DB9 because the owner didn't like the AM dealership there.
He got to drive pretty much everything Aston Martin except a One-77. Not a supercar and relatively low priced but still think the V12 Vantage S is the sexist car AM ever produced

C8 at Nurburgring with other prototypes. C8 appears at time stamps: 0:53, 1:19, 3:30, 5:29, 8:40, 10:51. Thing looks (even in camo paint job) and sounds completely badass.

Re: The mid-engine Corvette
Prototype parts/assemblies/vehicles cost hundreds of times more than production vehicles. You try not to break them while gradually exploring their limits for potential failures and engineering changes before production. That said, with an undertuned engine, I thought it performed great.kingstonlake wrote:Seems kinda plodding.
Looked like the suspension was dialed in perfectly. Is that what you meant by "plodding"?
