Seriously best bargain in NYC is the Staten Island Ferry - it's free. Go down to Lower Manhattan walk past new Freedom Tower - then get to ferry terminal. Take a trip out to Staten Island and back - great views of city and Statue of Liberty

If you like Pakistani food, 37th St and 9th ave, called Karachi.
If you just wanna do touristy stuff you can meander around Manhattan and stare up at the sky like every other annoying tourist.

If you don't get Pakistani food Iraq will lose even more cities to the Taliban.

48th St. and 9th has a good Creole-Cajun spot and a nice selection of Abita beers on tap. Called The Delta Grill.
All I got is food recommendations... you can always ride a horse in Central Park or something.

If you are looking for cheap stuff, the Ferry is a great suggestion. Walking across a bridge is always fun and the views never get old.
I'd say walking around down town is always neat to get a sense of history. Old brick streets and there's a pub down there that George Washington drank a few pints at.
If you are in Soho, just walk around you will see some of the hottest women on the planet all out shopping with their husbands money.

Head to Alphabet City if you're looking to buy weed or dope.
Walk the High Line.
See if the cable car ride over the East River is running to Roosevelt park.

Very slowly wander on the sidewalks at lunch while tilting your head to look up at all of the big buildings. But do it in midtown.

There's a cheap dive bar in Korea Town with roof top access, pretty mind blowing view of the Empire State Building.
Some of the hottest women in the city are in Korea Town and some damn fine food around there too. Don't be afraid to go to some of the bars/restaurants that are above the street level. Warning, the food gives me the shits but it's worth it.

Momofuku noodle bar has the best chicken wings I've ever had. Zum Schneider is good for giant beers. That's all I've got.

the person that recommended packistani food was sort of on the right idea, get out to an outter burrough and go to an ethnic neighborhood. Best hamburger in NYC is at Donovan's at Woodside.

I know a lot of New Yorkers are pissed at the WTC site because they think it doesn't fit and that it's full of tourists, but I have never been to NYC and I will likely go in the not too distant future specifically for that. I will probably cry.

Also, get a subway pass for a day and just wander around from area to area.

I would like to start around battery park and walk around the whole area. St Paul's Zuccotti park, the city hall, just kind of wander and end up at the memorial later in the afternoon with the sun low. I am pretty sure the whole day will be tough, but I gotta do it.

I'm on the ferry now, did 9/11 this morning. Lunch at Gotham Market was awesome. Headed to mathematics museum next.

Does anyone really give a shit if New Yorkers like it or not?
I haven't seen it in person, but photos and descriptions all make it seem pretty impressive.

I seriously can't think of one NY that doesn't like it. It's a very well done memorial.

I think you're thinking of the museum that had been selling cheese plates in the gift shop. Many visitors considered it tacky, trashy, and out-of-place, just like yo momma.
No disrespect.

I heard a radio show where they were interviewing New Yorkers and the general consensus seemed to be, though not negative... apprehensive... Maybe they were in a surly part of town.

I have a few friends and some family in NYC and they've all told me how much they like everything.
On the other hand, they're all transplants. You were probably hearing interviews of real NYers, and we all know how warm and friendly and easy-to-please they are.
