2017/18 MSU Women's BB Official Thread

the ladies wrapped up media day yesterday.. some new faces to a relatively young team. Losing Jankoska will obviously have an impact, especially early on in the season. But the ladies seem to have a close team, very tight-knit.

Neither the Big 10 pre-season coaches poll nor the media picked the Lady Spartans to finish in the top 3. But that's why they play the games.

Saturday’s state hoops: Freshman leads MSU women

Freshman Sidney Cooks led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points off the bench as the Michigan State’s women’s basketball team won its season opener Saturday, 100-58, over Robert Morris in East Lansing.

Shay Colley added 16 points, Branndais Agee 13, Taryn McCutcheon 11 and Taya Reimer 10 for Michigan State, which took control with a 29-8 second quarter.

Not pertinent to the thread, necessarily, but Taryn McCutcheon and her parents were at the EL football game Friday night. I don't know her, really, but I've hung out with her Dad off and on over the years. He's a good dude.

The Spartans held on and came away with a win today! Allen's double-double and Agee's team-high 13 points led MSU over WMU. Notre Dame is up next on Wednesday in South Bend, Ind. at 7 p.m.

You'll never mistake me for an expert on this matter, but while the team seems to have some nice pieces, they're going to struggle against top 25 teams and even beyond (like Miami last week) unless they're hitting lightening in a bottle on a given night.

I don't disagree - they're a solid team but definitely a few pieces shy of being a Big Ten contender.

yeah - tough night for the Lady Spartans.. was flippin' around last night to see if it was on the color television but couldn't find it. Might be a good thing it wasn't televised.

I suspect Suzy will have them locked in when the Big Ten season rolls around - but they're looking like a firm, middle-of-the-pack team right now.

Merchant: “I certainly always think it starts with the victim. I’ve seen a lot of courage and watch these women have to speak in front of someone that violated them. To me those people, in my opinion, are act-alone monsters. They're going to find their way to do the things that they do and it's really unfortunate, but this is a great university.

I’ll tell you this one little story about Lou Anna and women. When I got hired, I had a three month old child. And I remember her saying to me about my contract. She said 'We're going to put some clauses in your contract, to make sure that you're capable of being a mom and being in a leadership position.' She said 'So many times we put women in leadership positions and then never give them the resources they need to do their jobs. That’s not gonna happen here at Michigan State.'

That's a little sidebar. I just want everyone to know that I think we need to focus on the victims and their healing process. And what Michigan State has done to put money, the $10 million in the terms of counseling and things like that, we're doing all the right things. It’s a horrible situation and you can't fix it. It'll never be fixed.

The man that is responsible for this is going to go to jail for a very long time and that's a positive thing, it's not the answer because those women are going to be frustrated and certainly go through some things for the rest of their lives. I’m proud of this institution and certainly proud of Lou Anna Simon and Mark Hollis and everybody that's involved here."
