Better than Jalapeno?
I love these things. Hot, but not too hot. They add a bite to anything... morning eggs, Vienna sausages, sardines, pickled anything. Jalapeno poppers!
Is there a pepper or hot garnish that even comes close?

Negative.
Jalapeno or GTFO. Banana peppers are excellent too. All the other peppers are pretty much garbage. Especially those red and yellow POS peppers people try to claim are good. No one likes them. But no wants to say it.

I just had banana peppers on pizza for the first time (ever) last week. I thought they were great.

Banana peppers get the edge over jalapeños. It’s a small edge, but an edge

Have to agree. Theyre the Goldielocks of peppers. Not to hot, not to cold, not to Spivey, not to blah. Just right.

Ha. Not a snub. It is more that I don't like peppers (and poppers) in general. But love jalapeno and banana peppers (on pizza is amazing SG).

Okay. But you didn't answer the question. Pickled or fresh? Huge difference.Nordic wrote:The Pantry wrote:

Definitely huge bang for the buck but over powering. Use them sparingly.InTenSity wrote:Habenero peppers. Tasty and hot.

Either way. Mixing it up is good. If I had to pick one, pickled.

Occasionally, I'll want the habanero flavor without the heat, so I'll remove the seeds and veins. Still really good stuff. Otherwise, yeah, the two peppers being discussed here are FTW-level accompaniments.

I use ghost peppers in the compound for my homeopathic suppositories. If time is a factor, I'll just shove one or two right up the ol poopshoot. Works every time.

Oh, fresh for sure, but when I pickle, I always toss in a jalapeno.

Pickled jalapenos are not my favorite. Okay on nachos but the vinegar masks their true flavor.Nordic wrote:The Pantry wrote:Okay. But you didn't answer the question. Pickled or fresh? Huge difference.

Have been dinking with a published chili recipe for many years. Only non-fresh ingredient in it that delivers some heat is a little red chili flake. No chili powder. The rest of the flavor and heat comes from fresh peppers of many varieties. One batch is never exactly the same as another but all are good. A mix of fresh peppers is key. Whatever is available at your store. Jalapeno, serrano, poblano, Anaheim, habanero, red finger, etc. Thing is you have to taste test them. Not each one, but each batch you get at the store. For instance, fresh jalapenos are all over the map heat wise. Some are pleasingly hot and others are like green peppers.
Been a while since I made chili. On the to-do list.

Trick question.
Who would prefer pickled japs/bananas to real ones? I mean in some cases you take what you can get. But in no circumstances could pickled peppers be better than real ones. It's just a cost and convenience factor for restaurants.

Pickled pickles are better, why not peppers?

And freshly made jalapeño poppers are fucking awesome. This thread is making me think I should go to the store and make some.

I like the heat in Habaneros but find the flavor awful. I typically roll with Serranos if I want a little heatt. For a tangy pepper I go with pickled Hot Cherry Peppers.
