New Greta Van Fleet Thread
Since I can't find any of the old ones.

Review: Greta Van Fleet gets its Led, and more, out at Saint Andrews Hall
All of that fit nicely amidst the songs that have caused the rock world to welcome GVF as its new savior act. The group came out steaming with “Talk On The Streets” and an epic “Black Smoke Rising,” while Josh Kiszka introduced the stretched-out “Flower Power” as “a song about peace, love and unity, which we’ve lost in the passing of the last year.” A cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil Is Goin’ On,” meanwhile, affirmed GVF’s genuine affinity for stomping electric blues.
Much like those aforementioned predecessors, GVF clearly has room to grow; also like Plant on his early Led Zep tours, Josh Kiszka, in his black-embroidered kaftan and headband, seemed at times a hesitant frontman still feeling out his way as an on stage host. But as the group, which performs again Friday, Dec. 29, at Saint Andrews, roared through a venue-shaking n encore of “Highway Tune” and “Safari Song” it was clear GVF is far more than mere hype and is capable of riding its momentum to proverbial next levels.

I know people criticize them as LZ mimickers, but I really enjoy their sound. When I listen to this, it sounds like it could have been dropped on any Zep album (and I would have enjoyed it).

Greta Van Fleet caps breakout year with celebratory Detroit homecoming show
Explosive in many spots, rough and green in others, the 75-minute performance exemplified where Greta Van Fleet now stands: The precocious group’s earnest, sizzling take on Led Zeppelin-style rock has rightfully earned it gobs of glowing attention. But there’s also room to grow and — given the band’s obvious chops, drive and disarmingly sunny personality — no reason to doubt that can happen.
It’s been a long while since a Detroit show by a rising local rock artist generated this sort of gotta-be-there buzz — perhaps not since the White Stripes’ November 2001 homecoming at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

I don't know what happened to the original thread, but I really enjoyed revisiting Bee's thread on fleet sales.

So, I got a notification about a video of GVF actually covering Led Zepplin stuff. It's pretty underwhelming, but the kids are young. I really do enjoy their last releases, and I'm hoping for more... but if you are a LZ fan, the original is light years above.

Robert Plant gives GVF a thumbs up, though it might be a bit grudgingly.

I watched this today. I thought it was entertaining, and I confess there were a few in the Zep vs. GVF quiz that I got wrong.

They've been playing virtually full time since they were 14 or so. Tons of video out there playing at small town festivals etc 3-4-5 years ago. They've done it the old fashioned way more than most new bands.

Meh, I don’t get the hype. If I wanted to listen to Led Zeppelin I’d listen to Led Zeppelin.

It's because their songs are pretty good. I'll assume you wouldn't buy LZ6 because it sounds like Led Zeppelin.

Physical Graffiti? I didn't even know there was an LZ6. Anyway, it's not that I think GVF is bad, I think they're interesting in that it's as if they're straight out of 1974. They clearly have talent, but it's just not for me. I'm sure I listen to plenty of music that other people wouldn't like. That's just the nature of music I guess.

John Bonham. His drum play always fascinated me...it was different. This vid breaks it down in terms I still don't understand

Greta Van Fleet prepares debut album, Fillmore header
The members of Greta Van Fleet were working on their debut album last month at a Nashville recording studio when actor Tom Hanks swung by and offered his nod of approval.
Hanks had been down the hall, where his wife, Rita Wilson, was recording, and the two-time Oscar winner — whom the young members of Greta Van Fleet recognize as the voice of wholesome cowboy Woody from Pixar’s “Toy Story” films — got a taste of their sound and expressed his fanfare for the group.
“ ‘Bitchin’! I love this stuff,’ ” Hanks told the boys, recalls Greta Van Fleet guitarist Jake Kiszka. He laughs. “I heard Woody say ‘bitchin.’ ”
Hanks isn’t the only one on board with Frankenmuth’s throwback rock quartet. Earlier this year, Greta Van Fleet played Elton John’s Oscar party, at the request of Sir Elton himself. Bob Seger let the group open for him in concert last year. And Justin Bieber pulled up in his Lamborghini to a recent show in Los Angeles, after catching their set at Coachella.
Now the band is prepping for a slew of live dates — including three sold-out concerts next week at the Fillmore Detroit and slots at Austin City Limits and Chicago’s Lollapalooza festivals — all before their debut album is completed, let alone released

Greta Van Fleet nails the high notes at Fillmore Detroit in homecoming kickoff
These moments don’t come too often nowadays in the rock world.
But there’s still nothing quite like catching a talented, rising young band, just as it’s feeling the wind at its back and hitting its first fearless strides.
Greta Van Fleet — full of grins, sweat, concentration and high spirits — delivered big Tuesday night at the Fillmore Detroit, the first of three sold-out shows from a Frankenmuth-bred, Detroit-based rock quartet that’s been piling up buzz and international airplay.
It was a special night for the fortunate 2,800 who crammed into the Fillmore to watch the three Kiszka brothers and their drummer pal Danny Wagner pump fresh air into old hard-rock conventions. The 90-minute performance showed off a band that’s clearly riding high on confidence, propelled by self-belief and the empowerment that comes with newfound success.
There was a hum in the air even before showtime, as fans streamed into the Fillmore for one of the hottest hometown rock events in recent memory. At ticket resellers such as StubHub, floor spots for Greta’s Friday show — initially sold for $29.50 — are going for $150-plus. All for a band you could have wandered upon at Arts, Beats & Eats two years ago.

Wow...you can certainly hear that the time on the road has been good for them. Much tighter musically than some of the earlier stuff you see out there.
The behind the head guitar solo around 11:00 is definitely a 70s touch. The last song has kind of a ZZTop Fandango era vibe to my ear.
I remain impressed by these kids and hope they become huge, they seem like nice guys.

They were just playing Highway Tune during the Stanley Cup Finals in Vegas. These boys have made it.
Also I take back my opinion from earlier in this thread. The more I listen to them the more I want to hear more. They rock.

I'm a fan. Yeah they are Zeppish, I think that's a good thing. No one else is putting out shit like that.
I feel ripping blues/rock is under represented in our current pop-culture.

ALTHOUGH... I did hear from a music guy that one reason they popped up so quickly was a large investment from a rich grandma that got them a fancy ass management firm (or something like that, I was drunk when I heard the story)...

The young rockers from Frankenmuth, Michigan are scheduled to be on the show on Thursday, July 26, 2018. Also scheduled for the same show is "The Crown" and "Mission Impossible - Fallout" actress Vanessa Kirby.

Standing O from the audience.
Fallon gushing over them.
They did pretty well and at least were playing live.
Good exposure for the kids.

They should call their next album Led Zeppelin V and I'm not saying that in a derogatory manner.

A few friends of mine are stoked to see them at Lollapalooza next week. I had not heard of them until I asked who they were going to see at Lolla, but I was pleasantly surprised by their sound.

Honestly, the first time I heard the Curtain Falls, I thought the vocals were a little irritating/grating. But, I've been sitting in the car for the last hour, and that chorus has been popping up in my head.
I think they put in play some chord changes that producers know are memorable.

I can't quite imagine anyone being obsessed with them. I'm mighty happy to see some local kids busting out nationally. It's fun for me that they're more of an old time rock band. To merit obsession they need to sustain it for a while. I'm already worried about how they're going to handle the fame, adulation and $$.
Either way I'd have given my left nut to be in their position at age 19 or 20 or whatever they are.
