Thanks for this. It's one of those pretty obvious things, but it brought home a few new items. Even unintended, the large social media players are contributing to a breakdown of social structure.

I have been making a more than conscious effort to avoid the temptation of hype.

I have been trying more than ever to see multiple angles and in the wake of the OTL piece, trusting the media less.

Quitting FaceSpace. Mom will be mad until I get the website updated with pics of the kid.

I can’t do it anymore. FaceSpace is the purveyor of propaganda and misinformation and has financial incentive to never change. Until there’s some serious changes to privacy laws and liability of social networks for the information they propagate, I’m out.

Yeah. My mom will be mad. Everyone else I know will probably be happy.

Tbh the fact that you call it facespace and make it a big deal shows your age. Also that you’re worried about your mom missing you on it says “I need it more than it needs me”

But anyway great job on quitting what amounts to 2005 MySpace I hope we can give you a gold medal for it

Not really. It’s not being a dick it’s just saying that your abscence from it hurts you and your mom more than it hurts Facebook. Way to take a stand great job..... but....

But seriously, in the name of the thread... quitting social media really isn’t the answer to why social media sucks. I don’t know what the answer is tbh. I do know that the people that buy into the fake ass memes that dominate that space aren’t going to stop buying into them just because you quit

There’s a lot more than me quitting Travis. And a lot of people demanding federal action. And you also don’t know anything about how integrated my work and outside organizing was in the platform or how much revenue that may have generated for Facebook or how much exposure it got my organizations. You’re basically talking out of your ass thinking you’re cool. But you aren’t, baby.

Oh yes I’m sure Facebook is just gonna be dying for that Wyoming or whatever the fuck revenue. Jesus man. Move out to the middle of no where means that it’s time to understand your role.

Look dude. Quitting isn’t the answer. You quit and your idiot mom and otpts idiot mom only hear from their idiot maga friend. So good job. You’re ensuring your own silence. Cool. Enjoy your bubble moron.

Only reason I check in on Facebook is to see how family and college friends are doing. Most of the time I’m on insta looking at travel pics. I actually really like Instagram way more than Facebook. way less bs there.

As you can probably tell, Travis owns a couple shares of Facebook and is counting on it for his retirement. C’mon, Roc. Stay for Travis so he doesnt go hungry in his old age.

I don’t give a shit of roc stays or goes. Shares or no. That’s the thing. His arrogance is astounding. Like his quitting would matter.

Dog, your quitting doesn’t mean a fucking thing to anyone other than you now have fewer avenues to get out an appropriate message. If you weren’t so full of yourself you’d be a much better person but here we are.

Yeah no it isn’t just you. It’s every other liberal. So now your mom and otpts mom are exclusively exposed to propaganda. Cool cool cool. Great work. I’m sure that was a hit with your group of 7 friends. But we’re all gonna die now because you decided to make a point. Neat.

The sad part is that roc knows goddamn well that I’m right that running away like an idiot isn’t the right answer to the social media problem but he’s too much of a bitch to admit it

social media sucks because no one gives a fuck about your opinion that you think is a fact and your hot takes are stupid (unless you're famous...then people care about your dumb hot takes)

great quote from JFK

"The great enemy of truth is very often not the lie--deliberate, contrived and dishonest--but the myth--persistent, persuasive and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."

An opinion piece examining why congress is so hesitant to regulate SM and the internet. Is it because they're a bunch of Luddites and can't understand it, or because both parties still hold to the deregulation mentality of Reagan and Clinton?

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/11/technology/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-hearing.html

The Daily Podcast: Facebook's plan to police the truth

https://radiopublic.com/the-daily-GMB3yp/ep/s1!a656a2d7d95870ec64d1009d35a9e68f26755022

I still come to the conclusion that SM can't be expected to police fake news when they have a profit motive not to. Regulation is the only solution barring a consumer groundwell that likely won't happen.
