Tum.
I actually saw a tweet from Doug Gottleib, who I think knows a lot more hoops than any of us, and he said he thought Izzo should have played Tum more precisely because of this.
I think that is probably just a case of Gottleib not being super familiar with Tum, and maybe having seen him a couple of times fly in on the break for a layup. Tum is not exactly a dribble penetrator as a PG. He goes backwards more often than he goes forward.

Re: Izzo needs to retire
Oh and ok, back to the point. We don't have guys who were capable of doing anything constructive on dribble penetration against that 2-3 zone. So is that a lack of adjustment on the coaching staff's part? Or is it smart to plan to put your 4 in the high post, feed him and make him the facilitator to try to get open shots for your wings and PG who are all pretty good shooters?
If you want to attack Izzo's recruiting strategy that's another argument.
If you want to use a game against a team that runs a 2-3 zone that we play once a decade to say that Izzo's offense "sucks", you are really coming off as a twitter troll. I don't think any of us know basketball well enough to be able to break down the intricacies of the sets he runs, and what he changes from year to year.

Specifically, talk about the sets that MSU runs against conventional defenses, and how long we've been using them. I want you to call out at least 5 or 6 of them and provide references to past teams. Get off twitter dude, it's ruining your brain. Jesus you watch two tournament games in a row that we lose and miss wide open shots in and all of a sudden Beilein is Paul Westhead and Izzo is running 4 corners.

Tum probably never dribbled the ball below the free throw line in 4 years except on fast breaks.

You want to blame the staff for not recruiting guys who can drive the ball? I guess that's a fine opinion and fair. Maybe we shouldn't have recruited Bridges or Winston or Langford. I don't think Romeo Weems can do that either, maybe we should stop recruiting him.
I love Ca$h but he's got to tighten his handle this summer.

Coach them up? Ok. I'm going to sign up Coach Izzo to teach me to have a 45" vertical.
Cash? Bridges may not be great at it but he’s done it. Who recruits the players? Jackson could have tried more but our lottery pick was on the bench because ben fucking Carter. Pissed away another chance at a natty. Izzo is what he is.
Do you attack a zone with dribble drive or passing?

Just saw this, by TBL's Kyle Koster (MSU grad). I thought entirely fair. Except for when he called Jackson a Center.

Cash is a good shooter if he could get defenders to play off him to stop him from driving it would add a lot to his game. I agree working on his handles and lateral speed on d would be huge for him.

He's a good shooter but hes painfully slow in getting his shot off. he'll never be able to break anybody down and pull up.

I won't listen to Sports radio for a couple of weeks. No way. I'm not saying we don't deserve some of what we'll get, but it's just not worth it. At this point, what good does it do?

I might tune into Jack and Tom later.. Jack tends to approach things from a logical, rational standpoint.. and he's been around long enough to know that this stuff isn't life and death. He always has good dialogue, guests and doesn't take a ton of calls, especially from frothing-at-the-mouth-rage callers.DWags wrote:I won't listen to Sports radio for a couple of weeks. No way. I’m kind of shocked he isn’t calling for Izzo to retire like the op. Maybe he believes Izzo gets to write his own exit but his call outs are harsh. I agree with his premise though that Izzo needs to hit the reset button and adapt.

Good point. But I like when we’ve won a big game or beat Michigan to listen to the misery of those callers. This fall it was really enjoyable. It’s like that back street boys song you’ve sung under your breath Travis. You know you like it, but you won’t admit it in public.
But yeah, I’m a music news guy 85% 90% if the time.

I sure hope Kentucky doesn't run a zone. Also, weird, wet blanket bump. If we lose tonight, Floyd gets the blame.

I flew across the country, bet $250 on the game, paid $300 for a ticket, and drunk posted on a message board after losing to 11 seed Syracuse as a National Title contender. If that makes me look bad, I don't wanna be right. Don't forget to update the Swill scoreboard, who's in charge of that? Miami or Nigel?

I was searching for another thread on retirement and found this. Thought it was funny that he we are #1 in the preseason poll and not long ago there was an advocacy for Izzo's retirement.

Doing the same bro. I don’t know about meaningless, I think it’d be cool to stay #1 for awhile and it’d be a solid non conference win down the road. Either way, long season.

It's nice to be at the top of the rankings, and it's more enjoyable to watch the team win than lose, but that's about it for me. But for the season, a win or loss doesn't really tell us much.
