Have we wrecked kids?
Interesting read.
"I’m constantly hearing from teachers that attention in the classroom is problem. One teacher told me that on average, eight out of her twenty-two children have trouble with attention on a good day. Veteran teachers are also complaining that kids are falling out of their seats at school, running into walls, and are overall clumsier than they were thirty years ago."

I'm a bad person because the thought of children going from a normal sitting position to falling out of their chair with some stupid look on their face made me laugh. Also walking into walls. That made me laugh too.

Re: Have we wrecked kids?
I broke my arm as a kid during recess when I trierd to jump out and grab a rung too far out of my reach on one of those horizontal ladders. It was the old style that had horizontal bars on the bottom of the apparatus for your feet. Anyway, I missed the rungs and cracked my arm on the foot rest.
Did my parents bitch at the school about unsafe conditions? Shit no, they told me to quit being an idiot and that I deserved what happened to me. Kids these days... pretty soon they'll all have their own protective bubbles so little Johnny can play safe.

Cracked my head open playing football during recess by running head-first into an 8' diameter piece of concrete drainage pipe that served as a piece of playground equipment. No such fun as running through a piece of drainage pipe on today's elementary school playgrounds.

Re: Have we wrecked kids?
I got pushed off "the big slide" in 1st grade by a wacked out kid named Zeke (not sure what was technically wrong w/Zeke but he was basically feral). Broke both arms and got stitches on my head. That was it, no blame placed on anyone or talk of stupid ass lawsuits. The way it should've been. I tell ya what, it taught me a lesson that's for sure. to this day when I get on a slide I SURE as hell check my six & make certain there's no crazy person behind me.
and as for the head injury, there's been no lasting effects of that whatsoever. for the head injury, there's be no lasting effects whatsoever, except for the head injury.

I am trying to figure out which is worse - the premise of the article or people who read it and think "that makes sense."
Did kids born prior to 1960 fallout of their seats at school, run into walls and have more problems paying attention in class?
I sure am glad I was one of the lucky ones who grew up on the playgrounds of the 60's and 70's, otherwise I am not sure I could have avoided running into walls on a daily basis.

I still have the scars. The hand-sized red rubber balls hurt the most.

First off, a wacked out kid named Zeke could simply not have existed as he had appropriate playground equipment to shape his mental development. Secondly, playing on said equipment would have given you incredible balance and agility instilling in you the ability to avoid injury.

Re: Have we wrecked kids?
We had a big hill outside at our school playground. During the winter, we would all bring our "dress up" shoes so we could slide down the freaking hill standing up. At the end of every winter recess there would be tattered remnants of bodies, debris, etc. at the bottom of that hill.
No one EVER thought to end it.

I'm 22, we weren't allowed to play red Rover at recess at any point during my time in school.
I can't imagine where it's gotten to in the last ten to fifteen years

Re: Have we wrecked kids?
Back in the day (80's) some parents were concerned about head injuries to their kids so they didn't become stupid. Others not so much.
And the moral of the story is?????
Nothing new under the sun except a new group of old people to shout at the clouds.

They stopped my kid's class from playing football at recess when verbal and physical fights broke out consistently.
& frankly, I am surprised I remembered that cause I usually don't listen that closely to my kid regarding middle school drama.
I also have no problem with it. The school stopped it when it got dangerous. gawd forbid.

Re: Have we wrecked kids?
It's the goddamn lawyers' fault. Schools are too worried about the kids getting injured, and some fvcking shaister lawyer will sue the school for "unsafe conditions."

Your school sounds shitty. I went to private school and we were even allowed to play that (along with dodgeball and pepper and all the other games kids can't play nowadays).

We had a similar hill. it was solid ice by mid December. There was always frozen blood spots all over it. It was awesome.

I saw some horrific Red Rover injuries in my day. One time these two kids were like "We're not letting go no matter what, (whoever it was) is not getting through." They called the kid over, he bowled through their arms and they didn't let go... so instead they whipped around behind him like a bolo and smacked face first into each other. One had a possibly broken nose and a fat lip and the other lost a tooth.
It was awesome.

Every generation thinks today's youth are soft, coddled and more disrespectful.
I for one am thankful the state of Michigan legislature in its infinite wisdom saw fit to legalize fireworks. Hell, I had to spend a buck for a pack of fire crackers back in the day (the early 70's when a candy bar was 15¢).

Re: Have we wrecked kids?
I too suffered two conclusions on the playground. The first resulted in 5 stitches and the second included a hallucination that I was floating in a black sky filled with purple clouds (also related to a fall from the big slide). Happy hallucination ended in a bright white flash of pain coinciding with what I think was the resumption of breathing.goodbar wrote:I got pushed off "the big slide" in 1st grade by a wacked out kid named Zeke (not sure what was technically wrong w/Zeke but he was basically feral). End of school party for my third grade saw a kids arm get snapped like a twig when he "refused to let go" during Red Rover. Crappy way to start the summer.
Good times.

Re: Have we wrecked kids?
Our high school Athletic Director/gym teacher, who was once voted High School AD of the year, was known to hand out gym ropes on snowy days so you could tie them to the bumper of a car and 'bumper hitch' more safely.
Now a days he would probably do hard time with for such behavior, not have a gym named after him.
