We scored 38 against a pretty good squad. 9 penalties hurt. We left points out there turnin touchdowns I to field goals. We’ll be fine. I think that we maybe saw the quickest team we’ll see this year. Top three anyway.

Watching the replay now and having my first drink(s) of the day ...
Why was Higby playing LT in the 2nd qtr? Obviously Chewins was out. Whatever the reason, it was a shit show.

Re: Hello darkness my OL friend ......
I've counted 3 times they let a free edge rusher come in on a quick pass. LT is blocking down, so it's not on him. Either The TE or RB is missing a chip before going out in their route or Lewerke is not getting it out quick enough. Most glaring was Sokol right before the end of 2nd qtr FDIII TD. The play was obv going to him, but he probably is supposed to chip the DE before leaking out. Or they are intentionally not blocking him and Lewerke held the ball too long.

Re: Hello darkness my OL friend ......
Since the brief 2nd qtr debacle with Higby at LT he's been back to Higby at C with Reid at RT and Campbell at LT. The line seems to have settle in after that. Higby had a rough 1st qtr at C a brief moment at LT, but seems to have rebounded.
I will say that having to face a 3-man front in your first start at C is not exactly a setup for success.

Welp, spoke too soon. 7 min mark of the 3rd and its Allen back at C and Higby back at LT. Obviously a designed rotation.
3-yd run LJ, 5-yard jet Nelson, false start (Beedle), sack (Campbell). Lewerke limping off with cramps. Pick six coming the next series.

Alright, same OL lineup the next series with the Lewerke pick six. Definitely not on the OL though. Cramps a factor? Who knows...

End of the 3rd/start of the 4th... Allen back at C with Reid and Campbell at tackle. Solid drive, but stalled inside the 5/Cody White TD called back.

Sidebar.... Khari Willis played a great game. WBH could caught that INT, but he was a boss on the downfield coverage.

Sidebar II... piss poor D substitutions from the very first series to the last. Obv they were running uber-tempo, but this was known going in. That is piss poor coaching. You gotta know when you can sub and when you can't.

Last TD drive, Higby back at C.
Takeaway after staying up and watching this shit till 4:41 in the fucking morning. We don't have a 4th guy they feel comfortable with playing tackle. And with Chewins out, Higby has to rotate in. We need Chewins back pronto.
Goodnight.

I think so. I've not seen a replay but I don't think he stepped into/followed through on that pass. Cramps or pass rush? I don't know.

Didn't Reid get owned once or twice at RT in the first quarter? I thought the rotation was due to that, but didn't really notice that they continued to mix it up after that.

Re: Hello darkness my OL friend ......
Without having access to the All-22 this is just a guess on my part but this game had all the hallmarks of one where the defense sold out to stop the interior run at the expense of LB flow in run defense.
Exhibit A was how they managed to stone LJ between the tackles.
Exhibit B was Hawyard's first TD which broke off Left Tackle.
Exhibit C was how easily we shredded them with speed option at the end of the game. Their LBs were committed to interior gaps and as a result the defense lost all flow. Props to the staff for recognizing it, props to Lewerke for not looking like a poser running it
In the end I'm guessing it was as much scheme as personnel and we showed we had an effective counter punch so I'm less concerned. That being said not being able to punch it in on the goal line was deeply concerning.

I agree. The rose bowl year at the start of the season there was a lot of concerns but by the end of the year team looked good enough to win the title.

Lewerke is the 1st QB we've had that actually can read/run the option. Cook et all were just window dressing.

My overall concern level on a scale of 1-10 is a 3.
Main concerns:
1) D subs were an abortion. How the fuck do we not know when we can/can't sub? UtSt's tempo was a known going in and we had substition penalties on the first and last drives. That is 100% on the coaches.
2) Why the fuck was Lewerke passing on 1st down late in the 3rd, up 10, on your side of the field, first snap of the possession and with Lewerke cramping up the series before. Pretty sure we ran on 1st to start just about every series (much to the sagrin of tRCMB I'm sure). And I have no problem with that given the opponent and O tempo they were running. But the timing of that call was mind bottling and my biggest beef with Warner since the beginning of time.
3) Offensively the OL struggled early getting into a rythm and with penalties. Especially with Higby at LT. It seemed to throw everything off across the line. They settled in midway through the 2nd. I don't think they will be dominate at any point this season, but it will look better next week.
4) A lot was perfect execution by UtSt's O, but schematically UtSt caught our D a few times. Their last TD run was a good example. There are a few ways to beat our D. Attacking our LBs with quick passes is one of them. NW did it last year as well and about the only team to repeatedly pull this off against us. To pull it off you have to execute at a high level all game, and Utah St did. The D stuffed the run (priority #1) and locked down the downfeild throws (priority #2). And there were no WTF moments out of our safeties.
Positives
1) We won and they showed balls on the last drive.
2) Our WRs are the best in the BIG. It is not even a question. Anyone that says Mich (pre Black injury), PSU (they are very good too) or OSU doesn't know wtf they are talking about They are in the conversation nationally with Ole Miss, Bama, etc.
3) Heyward is really fucking good.
4) I was actually impresssed with the pressure from our DEs. You are not going to get pressure on the bubbles and quick hitters. I also don't think we blitzed our LBs a lot given their tempo and game plan. But when they tried to go downfield or run playaction, the QB got hit.
Typing from my phone... apologies for the bLanche level grammer/typos

I'm gonna enjoy a full day of football with the 10 month old while tWife is out with her friends (decent tradeoff for tailgating all day yrsterday).
That said, getting Chewins back healthy will help. Good thing the schedule is back loaded.

Yeah, they were very concerned we’d try to shove it up their ass and we tried many times. I thought we’d over come in the second half, but we really didn’t.
I honestly think they’re just trying to find a combination that works and that Aliong with our usual scheme of rotating in moved guys around a ton.
I guess in the light of morning if you asked me what I’d be most concerned with, offense wouldn’t be the first thing it would be down the list. But our pass coverage had some real issues. That’s the biggest concern I have. And I don’t care about scheme or personal, your assignments are your assignments you either do them or you give up 24 solid points to a mountain west team.
