there's a fairly prestigious scholarship called the "Morehead Scholarship" - full academic scholarship to UNC- Chapel Hill.tGreenWay wrote:Morehead City.

one of my high school buddies was a finalist for it - during the interview stage he (allegedly) told the committee that he was looking forward to receiving "Morehead".
now - it wasn't awarded to him.. so I suspect he didn't really say that and just thought it was a cool story to tell people.. he ended up going to Duke on an athletic scholarship instead.
yeah, cool story, bro.

What a bullshit buildup to this. They wonder why people don't leave? It's because they hype these thing as the worst storm ever and then it's a fucking cat one.

Don't get wrapped up in "categories". Surge and rainfall aren't affected by "categories" categories only measure wind speed.

You sound disappointed. Sorry that the destruction may not be quite what you were hoping for. Maybe the problem is that idiots think a Cat 1 is no big deal?Dr. Strangelove wrote:What a bullshit buildup to this. They wonder why people don't leave? Do you think they were lying about it being a Cat 4 a couple of days ago, or lying about predictions that it would be a Cat 3 or Cat 4?
It is so fucking stupid when people complain that a hurricane was "Over-hyped". Jesus, can you imagine if they said, "Oh, it might not be so bad, maybe just a Cat 1" with 3 foot storm surge, and then it hits as a Cat 4 with 9 foot storm surge?
You have to prepare for a worst case scenario, because sometimes the worst case does happen. It is better to have people worried enough to take it seriously than not take it seriously at all. You still have hundreds of idiots that need to be rescued (putting the rescuers in danger). If not for the hype, it would probably be thousands.

Re: Hurricane Florence
Been through two hurricanes before this one - I know they're no joke but the difference between a cat one and even a three is huge. The fucking hype here has been off the charts and we've had panic buying since fucking Monday.
The news has pivoted from wind damage to storm surge and rain. Gotta feed the diasaster viewing machine.
Look hurricanes happen and nc is "due" for a big one as they seem to hit about every 30 years (Hugo, Camille, Labor Day) but this one ain't it

Yeah, I'm of the mind that its' still better to hype it and get as many people to safe places as you can just in case. I don't know about the hype, but they were just reporting what it was at the time and what they thought it would be due to computer models. Is that hype? sure, but what would be said if the surgewas really bad and the news and government agencies were saying "I don't think it's a big thing, everybody relax".
Thing is, I get the point that, if they cry wolf every year, people get sick of it and say "hell, we're just riding it out". I know there was a family we were close with from Harrison Township, their daughter was living in Savanah and the other is a senior in a small college down there . The oldest daughter took a design job in Troy that she's starting in a couple of weeks. They all decided to move her up here this week to get out of the way. Had dinner with him last night and we were watching the radar, he thought his house would be fairly safe, but was glad he had his family here.

I'm officially proclaiming this a MAC level storm. Though some may need to #rtb.
Buddy of mine lives in Wilmington just across the bridge from Wrightsville. He went to Raleigh because he has 2 kids under 6 otherwise he was gonna ride it out.

If you're an old dude and aren't responsible for anybody but yourself, and you don't call for rescue when shit happens, fine. Have at it. Some people stay with their families and impose their idiotic will on others. That's my problem.

Re: Hurricane Florence
I get that, but it was a Cat 4, and was expected to still be a Cat 4 when it land, up until the last day or two. As you said, there's a big difference between a 1 and a 3, let alone a 4 or 5. So the hype was warranted for what was expected.Dr. Strangelove wrote:Been through two hurricanes before this one - I know they're no joke but the difference between a cat one and even a three is huge. If you're local, then your local news has every reason, maybe even an obligation, to hype it, and even over-hype it, if it gets people paying attention. The national media, however, absolutely sensationalizes things. Shepherd Smith last year or the year before saying, "If you stay, you will DIE!!" Get a grip, Shep, no one in the path of a hurricane is turning on fucking national news to learn the latest on what's coming their way.

No, no there are not. EVERYONE has the means to evacuate. Local governments provide transportation and shelter for anyone that wants it in an evacuation zone. Poor, elderly, crippled, bed-ridden, it doesn't matter. When a storm is approaching, the news is constantly giving numbers for people to call if they need assistance evacuating. Don't have a phone? The police go through the neighborhoods, sometimes door to door, trying to get people to leave.Rocinante wrote:I know there are some people who don't have the means to evacuate, but I cannot abide the assholes who just ignore mandatory evacuation notices when they have the means to leave

Like Miami said; they’re damned if they oversell it and damned if they undersell sell it. We all saw the images of the cat 4; better to oversell and maybe save lives. Every model showed an historic storm. Sorry you were inconvenienced.

He has a BS in engineering from Duke, a MS in Physics.. last I heard, he lives in a little shack somewhere in rural north Florida (and if you've ever been to rural north Florida, you might as well be in Alabama or Georgia) - assisting state investigators with illegal poaching activities.
