Did two dudes just #chitchat for 10hrs waiting for this launch? That is some Tour de France level announcing.
I was just watching the live feed. Nice work if you can find it. Looks like they're close to lighting this candle this time. The thing is venting now and I guess that means it's getting close.
Dude just said they're nine minutes out.

Plus all the high-pitch squealing.
Did those guys name themselves the official voices of today’s launch?

Watching the meteorologist lady on TV she said the best night to see them in Detroit will be tomorrow night, if you're away from light pollution. So if we can get everyone to turn off the outdoor lights and Christmas lights, and business all turn off their parking lot lights there's a chance.

Might be able to see them looking to the north (get it...northern lights?). Wildest I've seen them was maybe 7-8 years ago. Even here in SE MI the overhead sky seemed to be shimmering.Floyd Robertson wrote:CORNER BLITZ wrote:

This is kind of a general space thread in addition to just Atronomy, so I'll post here that today is the 35th Anniversary of the Challenger explosion. The biggest "where were you when" moment of my childhood (I was in 7th grade, in social studies class).
And yesterday was the anniversary of the Apollo 1 fire.
And Monday is the anniversary of the Columbia disaster.
What a sad week for NASA. RIP.

Indeed. I still remember in my first grade classes they'd wheel in the tv and we'd watch the space shuttle launches. You ever see a launch living down there in Florida? Looking back I wish I had made my down there to see one back in the day.

I haven't seen a shuttle launch, I wish I had. I saw a rocket launch a couple of years ago. Very cool thing to see in person if anyone ever gets a chance.

Two questions on the experience - how close can you get and how loud does it sound? I'm going to make it a goal to see this at some point. I had a friend go watch one in the last couple of years. He's an aviation attorney and it seemed like an incredible experience.

They have launch viewing at the Kennedy Space Center Complex, and I think that is within less than 5 miles from most of the launch pads (some only 2-3 miles). That's an additional fee on top of your admission to KSC (which is cool to go to on its own), and sells out in advance. But if it is a night launch, that isn't open to the public.
The one we saw was at 3:30 am, and we watched the launch offsite near Port Canaveral and were about 8 or so miles away. It wasn't so loud that we couldn't hear ourselves talk over it from that distance.
If you ever plan to go for a launch, this site is a great resource: https://launchrats.com/ . Tons of information on various viewing spots, the distance of each to the various launch pads, etc.
