reports that the folks in Paris were able to save some of the contents of Notre Dame.. that they will rebuild it and, obviously, parts of the building were saved. As sickening as it was to watch, this is all much better news than what I was expecting yesterday afternoon.

How does a large old structure possibly survive a fire without water to help put it out? If in-fact the French had the ability to drop water/retardant but didn't, they doomed the place. Yet another surrender by France.

Obviously they should have installed a sprinkler system when they built it 800,000 years ago.

Shockingly, there are intact wooden chairs inside. Other than where the spire came through, it appears to me that the inner vaulted ceiling prevented the burning A frame roof structure from coming down to the church floor. Dare I say "miraculous"?

The bell towers are apparently safe, so at least ol' Quasi still has somewhat of a place to stay.

It's so rare that a historic structure burns anymore (in the western world - I mean ISIS blew up and burned hundreds of historic sites, the fucking barbarians). I hope that this mobilizes the National Parks Service and other agencies that manage historic American structures to review all their fire safety plans. I am kind of ambivalent about Notre Dame, probably because it has no significance for me other than mythos, but if something like the Independence Hall burned, it would really suck.

first of all, any project assigned to the National Parks Service would be funded by tax dollars - so we can't have any of that.

secondly, yeah, it would suck if Independence Hall burned down.. but the MAGA ilk would get a new Wal-Mart in its place..
