wow - if only there was a way to predict that hate speech from the highest office in the land could provoke violence.

reminds me of why I've been sitting for the National Anthem for a few years now.

Remember between 2008 and 2016 when every word that came from the oval office was blamed for inciting violence from colored people towards shitty cops. Guess that doesn't apply now.

The lawyer for a 39-year-old man in Montana who fractured the skull of child for wearing a hat during the national anthem at a rodeo says his client believed he was acting on behalf of President Trump. Curt Brockway, who was charged this week with felony assault on the 13-year-old boy, suffered a traumatic brain injury and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army over his disability, which his lawyer Lance Jasper said contributed to his actions. “His commander in chief is telling people that if they kneel, they should be fired, or if they burn a flag, they should be punished,” Jasper said. “He certainly didn’t understand it was a crime.”

I guess Mark Cuban decided before the season no Anthem for the Mavs at home. It took 13 games for anyone to notice. Now people are outraged.

I read Howard Cosell’s books and remember he had a passage talking about how the anthem had no business being in sports. I believe his book came out in the late 70s. When did anthems even become a thing at sporting events? I always grew up with it and never really questioned it but it is kind of an odd ceremony. There’s this expectation you will stand up and participate and even though it’s never spelled out what it is it feels like you will pay a price if you don’t go along with it.

The whole thing is cultish. It's really absurd if you think about the whole thing like where does the ring of the anthem performance end? Do you have to participate on the concourse? The bathrooms? The parking lot? Why don't we participate at home when we are watching on TV. Also, you are standing up to honor your freedom but if you don't go along with it look out. That's not freedom.

The National Anthem is another manufactured controversy in the chaos playbook of big money folks like the Mercers and other major right wing donors who want you to see shiny objects while they keep tilting the playing field for themselves.

This is get the ham & eggers all wound up about The National Anthem diverting their attention from GOP attempts to limit the amount of COVID Relief checks, stop proposed child credits along with any sweetheart deals they may try to attach to legislation.

And it works.

Europeans think it is kind of weird that we do national anthems before sporting events, unless it is two national teams playing (in which case both are played).

But it is really a tradition dating back to the early 20th Century. Sports have traditions. 7th inning stretch, for example. So it is fine in that context, but it is silly that it has become a political fight. Like it, don't like it, whatever. People get way too worked up about it.
