Why Campbell?

Midwest/Ohio ties. Found success being the "other" school in his state. Is the most appealing realistic option to me.

I think OSU has their coach. I don't see Fickell going back there. And I'm pretty sure Cincy hasn't extended him yet (or given him a raise). I think he gets $2.3 million/year. I think he'd listen to $4+ million/year.

Luke fickell or Campbell

I don't have a specific guy in mind, I don't follow such things closely enough. But what I want is an innovative, offensive minded coach who cares about analytics, rarely punts, and goes for 2 almost every time.

I had a friend bring up Clemson DC Brent Venables. That's another name I could get behind. Basically my ideal candidate is someone with Midwest ties who's a defense first coach with a healthy appreciation for offensive innovation. I guess that's why I still value Duzzi.

Nigel, that link reads like its written by a Buckeye / Bearcat slappy.  If you are already making $2.3M per season to recruit and coach college football you aren't going to quake in fear of facing Ohio State every year.

I'm not sure Fickell is The Guy however a move from the AAC to the Big Ten is a major jump in income and recruiting budget, even going to "just" Michigan State.   Fickell is 46.  If he's not averse to signing a contract with some hefty exit fees, why not?

I still have a hunch if Dantonio "retires" its Narduzzi, warts and all.  He'll be 54 in April, a known quantity like Dantonio was and he knows MSU as well.

If I'm on the official "unofficial search sub-committee"  and know Dantonio is most likely done after the 2019 season I'd have our unofficial guy call coaches' agents to have off the record conversations to see if there is any intererest.  A lot of coaches who are looking to move already have a list of "I'd consider leaving X if Y interested".

Norvel - Memphis - AAC currently @ $2.6M/yr  will be 39 in Oct 2020

If MSU has any “in” with Clemson I’d do some serious mind picking with Dabo Swinney on his thoughts or recommendations on who he’d recommend. He took over a second fiddle program in the ACC and also in the state. He built a monster in the face of the Spurrier era of S.C. where they were rattling off of like 3 consecutive years of 11-2. So he’s been there. He’s got a system. Seems to work. Obviously the talent pool in SC, GA, FLA, NC etc is way deeper than Mich, Ohio, IND, ILL.

No real fool proof system on a replacement but he seems to have figured it out and made a few tough decisions along the way.

Sadly, the run & shoot led by Bob Gagliano did put pressure on the defense. But not for those reasons.

When you go 3-and-out and have only bled 20 seconds off of the clock due to incomplete passes it tends to make for a long game.

I get wanting a guy that can recruit Ohio. But scum osu psu and nd already do a decent job there. We need to get our fair share as well but pulling kids nationally be it big names  or under the radar guys is imperative. And MD was pretty solid at that. Seems his model was effective but you have to have a staff that’s better at cultivating and putting it in position to win. He does share a lot  of the blame for some really bad decisions in that area with staff and players. I’d really like to know what the balance is between assistants and him as far as offers go. It seemed to really be working then went flat. Did something change? I know I’ll get the 2016 reply but it doesn’t feel like he’s getting hits on under the radar guys as often.

I think things changed for Dantonio since his arrival and before the 2016 class, Blackwell and the aftermath.

Most importantly, after Cousins, BJ Cunningham and others, Power Five coaches started paying attention to what players MSU recruiters were talking. Sometimes those schools had minimal or zero contact until after MSU offered and was arranging campus visits.  If MSU offered the high 2* and 3* it meant they may have missed something.

The others are how early schools are leaning on players for a verbal and the outgrowth of players realizing they committed too early and treating the differently than in the past.

We have all heard of players visiting other schools, sometime in the same weekend or during the summer with MSU on the schedule but the player is pressure to commit before they leave the other campus. Don’t think Dantonio ever adjusted to the new realities of recruiting.

I have a theory on Cincy coaches. Lots of talent in Ohio. They get solid players because of the depth of talent there. It might artificially build a resume. Sure, they do well in the AAC....

From the article that Nigel posted above it sounds like it pains him to go up against OSU. It’s like really? Something weak about that. A guy like Nick Saban in his prime could be lured away with cash from any team and he could show up later and kick his former university’s ass with his new team. Gotta be cold blooded to be one of the greats.
