Entire athletic department could be facing layoffs

Talked to a buddy today in the AD's office and people over there are getting really nervous. Looks like a decision will come down in the next few days to layoff/furlough pretty much everyone in the 1855 building for at least 5 weeks.
Scary times with the cash cow ( football) being gone for now.

Well, if they have been working since 1855, they should just retire already.

Pretty sure that is not a possibility. Endowments are earmarked by the donor for a specific purpose. It is contractually. The university has no say in how they spend it (at least the ones I've seen).
I suppose they could contact the donor and try to convince them to use it for something else.

A lot of people will be hurting this year at schools and university. Building maintenance, food services, admins, etc.

I wonder if this is even possible. The loss of football this fall is estimated to cost 85 million.

Yep. With no fall sports there is literally nothing for these people to do. And no revenue to pay them. Really, really ugly.
