NIL's changing recruiting and breaking athletic department budgets.
NY Times Magazine (paywall) has a long piece on how NIL's are effecting athletic department budgets. Basically the major donors as eschewing going through the athletic department, going directly to the players from football, basketball, even field hockey.
The UNC AD is quoted "Its not a leak in the dam, NIL's have blown the dam up". There are two players on UNC's basketball team that could have gone to the NBA but their NIL deals resulted in them staying for the 22-23 season. Businesses like Bojangles (a regional competitor to nationally know Popeyes) is now going directly to individual athletes bypassing the previous donations to athletic departments.
Long and the short of it, D1 sports like volleyball, field hockey, most baseball / softball teams, track and field will see less funding.

My god, professional leagues competing with colleges salary wise. It’s why Michigan is loaded next year.
