UofM's new Prez sounds like McPhearson
I don't think he's a fan of athletics. This could get really good.

The tradition for presidents there is to get wasted first, then attend and sing and do shit at halftime.

While athletic success certainly isn't a prerequisite for successful universities, it's been continually shown that a successful athletic program is great for a U. I don't know why the president's don't get this.

Met him once, nice guy. Worst part of that job would be having to deal with the sports . I bet hr uses the job as a spring board to an Ivy League school.

Just read the article, good stuff. Something as stupid as fireworks after fb game is definitely beneath this guy. I think he will do a good job at this school.

There is nothing interesting about it. Michigan hired an academic (shocking) who doesn't feel the need to run the AD.

And your board of regents just voted down the fireworks you guys were going to have for Akron and PSU games. This is getting very interesting. Even more interesting ,are the comments made by alumni about your athletic department.
Dibiaggio was a dirt bag that saddled us with Marilee Dean, and this guy seems that type. I hope it's true. If so, you guys will suffer Ernie.

Are you really that thick? There are obvious, unspoken undertones in that article. He was making it very clear that the tail won't be wagging the dog.
Brandon would do well to leave, but he seems like the type to try to rally the old guard troops and attempt a palace coup, because (he believes) that's what Bo would've done.

The incoming president who has no loyalties doesn't feel the need to be held responsible for the state of the football program. I'm shocked an academic would want no part of that potentially politically toxic situation. Any university president should let the AD handle that role and that person can live or die by that sword.

You, as the resident wolverine, jump into a thread in a hostile way and ignore that. You are the typical michigan man. Holding people to standards you yourself won't consider following.
The artical is pertinent and interesting in tone and those of us who lived through Dibiaggio and McPhearson find the parallel funny.
Your wolverines are exactly like we were in the 80's and 90's. Enjoy the ride.

McPherson?? You mean DiBioggio, clearly.
McP was a big fan of athletics ... he hired Tom Izzo and Nick Saban ... one thing he he didn't want to do is give Nick his 4th pay increase DURING the '99 season. He found the best coach at the time and kept paying him ....

NICK SABAN'S THE MAN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After an exhaustive search, MSU taps Nick Saban, a no-nonsense, proven winner in both college and professional football. When President Peter McPherson tapped Nick Saban as MSU's new football coach, Spartan enthusiasm ignited from coast to coast. Saban, at 43, ranks among the hottest young prospects in football coaching today. But McPherson generated more than excitement. During the search process, which ended December 2--eight years to the day Saban's oldest child was born--he showcased his presidential style. It was impressive. He sought a vast range of expertise, and he resisted pressures from all sectors. He alone made the final decision. When he did, the outcome received overwhelming acclaim by both the media and alumni. Many MSU leaders believe that McPherson's choice will, at last, unify all sectors of this university. To the extent that happens, his presidency will have scored one of its greatest triumphs to date. McPherson managed to stay in focus during the intensive search, even amid media speculation that reached Alice In Wonderland proportions, with rumor often replacing fact. Through all the clamor and pitfalls, McPherson stayed on course and applied a compelling rationale for his decision. He gave seven reasons for his pick, beginning with the fact that Saban, in his words, is 'tested and proven.' Indeed, as the architect of MSU's 1988 Rose Bowl championship defense, and as the mastermind of the Cleveland Browns defense, the NFL's stingiest this year, Saban boasts a proven record of success in college and professional football-- as head coach and as assistant, both in recruiting and in coaching--that few can match.

Inspired hire by McPherson- it's pretty amazing that after the carnage Perles left, his coaching tree still had pull for the next hire.

Saban didn't ask for a pay increase for just himself there. He asked for a program increase. That's a common fallacy about what was asked for. And it wasn't just money.

If he had just listened to Saban, I wonder how much quicker we'd have been where we are now? Who knows. It all seemed to workout for the best for us, so we have nothing to complain about now.

Accept as horrible as this sounds-- I was working summer camps with that staff and knew them pretty well ( I know roll eyes throw up) and I will bet on my family I know what was asked - including asking our provost (hmmmmm who was that at the time?) for a track of classes for athletes. Heck I still think I could give you a pretty accurate list.

I thought presidents didn't hire football coaches? .... just kidding, yep he did that one as well. I think everyone at the time thought that was a good hire. I can remember the press conference like yesterday ... everyone was crying with joy. Even the media was caught up. Not a bad first year ... kicked Fresno's St. ass in the bowl game. That was the highlight ... that and the Florida win!

Yeah, I don't have intimate knowledge of either situation (Saban vs. present) but it does seem to me that Nick with his NFL background was always a little too "big time" to be expected to stay in EL. Saban seems to me to have always had a football factory mentality and I get what Dwags is saying, but I don't think a situation like he had at LSU or has in Bama was really ever going to be palatable here. I did know some guys on the team very loosely and had some friends who knew guys on the team and he was treating it like a football factory when it was clear the Admin and culture here didn't really support it.
Again, don't know the ins and outs of the current staff but I'm much more comfortable with the approach that they take than the road that I suspect we would had to take in order for Saban to stay and become a fixture at MSU. Coach D and his staff seem to fit in with the landscape much better than I could ever imagine NS doing.
All of that said I'm not blind. Nick is the best in the business and at any point in the past decade and a half since he left, I would have had him back in a heartbeat. Today, though, after this dream season I would take Coach D over Saban at MSU, no fucks given.
