Legendary Houston Astros pitcher J.R. Richard dies at age 71
Loved him. My dad coached Vern Rhule at Colman high school in the early to mid 60’s. I think he was a teammate for a while.
Who was the pitcher in the 70’s that they said pitched a no hitter on acid? Was it him or Doc Ellis?

Never heard that story, but we should all play "6 degrees of Dwags separation" on tSwill sometime. Name a random person & see if Dwags has a story that connects him to the person. e.g. Dwags=>Dwags Dad=>Vern Rhule=>JR Richard. Boom.
BTW...Vern Ruhle was a ridiculously common baseball card when I was growing up. Seemed every pack I bought had a Vern Ruhle in it. Couldn't trade those away for dirt.
1980 Astros: Nolan Ryan, JR Richard, Vern Ruhle. Nice.

Lol. True. My dad would tell us there was a better player on his high school team but got messed up in Vietnam. Ruhle’s mom just passed away a couple years ago. He, of course died a while back.
It was Doc Ellis on acid for the no hitter.

R.I.P.
I don't know if I've ever told my Freehan story. He lived about four streets over in my subdivision in the late 60s. I learned this the year after the 68 World Series, so I would have been 9. Me and a buddy ride our bikes over to their house and ring the doorbell, hoping to catch Bill for an autograph. Mrs. Freehan opens the door and says hello boys, what can I do for you? We politely explain that wanted to get Bill's autograph. She says he'd love to but then points out the Tigers are on a road trip.
Nice job checking the checking schedule

So did you go back after the Tigers were back in town?
I don't remember Freehan playing, but I always liked him because I think his was the first baseball card of a player from the 68 team that I ever got. Probably because it wasn't all that expensive compared to an Al Kaline card.

Despite it being a less than five minute bike ride away, we never went back. Probably moved on to catching toads, pulling pony tails and finding Gordie Howe's house.

We stopped by the house of the lady down the street who always gave away free candy, and we always went back. And by ‘we’ I mean ‘me’. I was the fat kid in the neighborhood.

In my neighborhood, we had a Billy, McAuliffe and a Jimmy. They morphed into Freehan, Dick and Northrup on the sandlot.

Tallest American, who stood 7-foot-8, dies of heart disease in Minnesota
Told the story before about going to get a haircut and seeing the tallest person I'd ever seen...my cutter said he was 7' 7" and a regular customer. Whoever he was may now have the title of tallest American.
