Son was at the gym 5-6 years ago. Was doing deadlift reps of 350# and felt/heard something pop in his neck then got woozy. MRI showed he'd suffered what's called a carotid artery dissection. The middle of the three layers of the arterial wall had a 30mm long split in it. He could have stroked out. Was in the hospital 5 nights but required no surgery.

He was really into lifting then. First thing he did when I brought him home was go straight to his bedroom. Grabbed a cannister of something and went to the garage to throw it out. Turned out he'd been taking some kind of pre-workout powder. He didn't say a word to me about it while in the hospital but told his doctor. Doctor said he was aware of similar cases from lifters taking the shit.

I've seen 2 guys in the gym tear a bicep. Pretty fucking gnarly sight when that thing rolls up. One of them was actually benching and he got it up still.

Not sure why anyone would take something meant to raise your blood pressure before working out.
