Michigan with a Dem Majority
Was thinking what BIG things they could/should target with this rare chance to actually fix shit.
Retiree tax issue? School funding? (or was that a proposal when Engler's admin got it through) Kill "dark money" in state elections? (if possible?)
Hell, already sitting in a good place with re-districting, abortion, voting rights....(big deals other states are dealing with).

Retiree Tax Issue - low hanging fruit - yes
School funding - more problematic - something but what?
Dark money is State Elections - isn't that a federal issue?
Funding to Fix the Damm Roads - I'm all in on a tax on the wealthy for this one.

comprehensive and thorough K12 public school funding, sensible gun laws, examine the efficacy of these weird charter schools via transparency, worker protection (i.e. get rid of the "right to work" fiasco), etc.
it's a new day.. and it feels good to live in a state that values it's citizens, the workers, families and women.

I do expect, unlike when the feds were all R under the orange conman, they will come up with a comprehensive list of shit to get done legislatively while the opportunity lasts.
Pretty positive though, if they do target guns in a big way... this won't last long.

They did their list, which consisted of one legislative item, cut taxes for the rich & wealthy.
In the executive branch the list was to destroy the effectiveness of the regulatory agencies and they got a pretty good start on that, too.

also, even though decent Michigan folks have enshrined abortion rights into the state Constitution, I hope the new Democratic leadership will take the archaic 1931 'pro-birth', anti-female law off the records permanently and maybe burn it on the steps of the Michigan Catholic Conference and Child Brothel building.

I don't think that the Republicans should have paid for their tax cut for the wealthy by raising the taxes on the retirees. Furthermore, I think it was despicable that the State set the Public Employees' Pension Rates with the assumption that they would not be taxed, and then turned around and taxed them.

If union membership were mandatory, only in my wildest dreams, then Bob's car would be union made.

So if you worked for the government you shouldn't have to pay taxes but everyone else should. Got it!

Making union membership mandatory in Michigan wouldn't make Bob's cars of choice union made. They would still be made in other states by other people with good jobs.

The deal was that the State Pensions payments were lower because they were not taxed. Rather than higher payments from the State and then payments back to the state an agreement was to cut out the middleman and just have the state keep the money. That was until the Republicans fucked the Public Workers by taxing the pensions which had already had the taxes removed.

And they are, much to my sadness, 60 years of moderate Democratics attacking them has had a huge effect.

I nominate you to organize all of the work from home progressives. I’m sure they won’t mind the union dues. And the online union meetings would be a real hoot.Trapper Gus wrote:PennSpartan wrote:

Part of the problem here is that you have clearly no idea how easy that would be to do. Like you’re acting like it’s some impossible task and not actually easier to do than getting a bunch of people together in the same room at the same time

You've never actually been to Lansing have you? Especially since the chip supply chain issues?? You can't swing a dead cat without seeing vast parking lots of union made cars waiting for asian parts. Don't know how many employees GM has in the area, but it must be a metric shit ton since it's what... 5 different models produced within 15 minutes of each other?

Meanwhile the Russian Quisling Agent claims to live in MI when there automotive engineering jobs at Tier 1 suppliers in low tax AL, SC, TN and TX.
Of course he’d really have to live in MI to pay MI taxes.

Re: Michigan with a Dem Majority
Funny how the whines from the Russian Quisling Agent start showing up after MI’s first redistricting by a non-partisan committee made up of Democrats and Republicans made it impossible for the GOP to sleep walk through 19 election cycles to win majorities in both houses because of the GOP lost control of the maps.
With the exception of the low population hinterlands, the GOP won’t be able to nominate the most extreme candidates in running in the primaries and expect them to win in the general elections except in districts where there are more people than tractors or bears.

I truthfully never thought big would see the day. The GOP had such a stranglehold it was absurd. Thank God for redistricting. The outgoing GoP leaders are blaming redistricting, claiming that the people doing it are in the bag for democrats. Of course they ignore that every previous line drawing was 100% in the bag for Republicans the last 40 years. These people are incredibly unamerican. So happy they are out of power. But I don't expect too much action from the state but they will go after improving a couple key issues.

Fair, or at least not hugely unfair, though tilted Republican, districting plus a huge blue wave did this.

MI 10 refers to the 10th Michigan House of Representative district. The democrat candidate was Carl Marlinga and the republican John James.
Your fellow leftists have been decrying the racist Republican party but as the discussion went on it became clear that they were wishing that the old white guy (Marlinga) had won rather than the young black guy (James)

So, if a politician, who happens to be a person of color, is anti lgbtq anti choice, anti body autonomy, pro big Pharma. Pro Wall Street bail outs but anti student loan bailouts, liberals should vote for this person because they are a person of color?
If you cant see how fucked up your values are, I can’t help you.
