Re: tOfficial '23-'24 Michigan State Hoops Thread
Last word. I don’t know how that little elf does it, but I think he made MSU into the best team in our conference at the end of the year. He pulled AJ out of OSU game and gave holloman and brooks minutes. But leading into the BTT and then these three games he had MSU cooking. I really believe we were the best team at the end of the year in our conference. And go back and look at all the pre-season predictions. Like the thread says “nobody gives us a chance”.

Good point, that money could pay for school, surely there is a rule to stop that from happening?
Nope. I think there are schools (like BYU football) that fully fund scholarships for walk-ons through NIL
When Alabama becomes woke there will be no 5 stars for other teams.
Re: tOfficial '23-'24 Michigan State Hoops Thread
Booker, Carr and Normand are going to have Cooper and Kohler banging on them all summer in “optional activities,
@ 6’ / 180# Fears is going to be dealing with 6’4 Akins and Hoggard and 6’2” Holloman
Brooks needs PT. While I’ve never been in practice it looks like Hall and Hauser got the minutes that may have gone to Brooks. Next year add freshman Carr into the mix.
Don’t think Izzo would push Brooks out the door but if Brooks wants to leave Izzo will help him find a place to land. Brooks father Pierre Sr is HC at Frederick Douglas Academy in the Detroit PSAL and Izzo doesn’t burn many bridges.
If Brooks goes I be would not shocked to see him transfer to WMU to play for Stephens.

“I think one thing that Jeremy Fears brings that I like, he’s got that Mateen Cleaves, Magic Johnson leadership skills,” Izzo said. “Now will that continue as he gets to college? Who knows. He’s got that and some toughness. I think that can help rally the young guys.”

Izzo will be tasked with finding enough minutes and shots for all. A year after fielding queries about his roster being too small, Izzo’s now answering questions about whether his roster is too big and if everyone can be kept happy.
To that, he has a direct response.
“Somebody’s upset every day,” Izzo said. “They’re upset every day. If they’re starting, they didn’t get enough minutes. If they didn’t get enough minutes, they didn’t get enough shots. If they didn’t get enough shots, they didn’t get enough makes. Somebody is upset every day right now because you have so many people talking to these poor kids.”

Need to replace Joey's 3 point shooting.
That starts with Malik getting back up above 40%.

Starting lineup?
Hoggard
Walker
Akins
Hall
Maddy?
It would be great if Hoggard really improved his 3pt game. I thought he passed up a lot of shots unless the shot clock was expiring.
I don't know much about the incoming class, other than it has 2 McD AA's on it.
Reading that article above has me excited.

Fears seems to have great handles and everything I read seems to suggest he's a real leader. Coen Carr is going to freak people the hell out, could be the most athletic recruit for Izzo ever. I hope he stays healthy. Booker, who knows when he gets into the grind. He's slim, but will help Maddy and Cooper and Kohler out. By all accounts Normand get shoot the hell out of the basketball and runs the floor well. Lets see if that happens.
Excited for the season. a TON of high expectations. Izzo always seems to welcome them.
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I think Booker will start in one of these lineups:
Hoggard Walker Akins Booker Sissoko
Hoggard Walker Akins Hall Booker

That is Jeremiah Fears, who is not Jeremy Fears. Right? Jeremiah Fears has an offer from MSU, but Jeremy is class of 2023. Or do I have it mixed up? My biggest fears is that I will keep mixing them up. It gets confusing.

Correct. Jeremiah Fears is a 2025 point guard that MSU has offered.

We only play IU and Purdue at their place. We don't have to go to Rutgers or OSU.
Fair. But I still don't get why we can't have a round robin.

Seems pretty good. Dont have to deal with Purdue twice. Get Iowa at home, they are a pita at Carver. Would love Nebby twice, but whatever. Seems we should be able to go 4-2 in the single game matchups.
I can't remember last year, but it seemed skewed toward the tougher opponents.

242 players on that list. Might be fun to look at it after the draft.
I think both will be back. If Akins shows NBA 3 range at the Combine, he could get drafted.

Here is what happened with Hoggard.
He came over to tSwill to read some focused MSU basketball discussions. Instead he found stuff about MSU colors in another dimension, Big Ben nonsense, and other ridiculous stuff. Hoggard said to himself, why stay when the fans don’t work hard, take anything seriously, are completely unfocused. If the fans don’t want to commit to winning a championship, why stick around? So he declared. Thanks for ruining MSU basketball, GreenWay.

Offseason evaluation: Carson Cooper showed big upside in small role for Michigan State
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaabk/offseason-evaluation-carson-cooper-showed-big-upside-in-small-role-for-michigan-state/ar-AA1bfvaO
Mady Sissoko started and ended the season as the team’s starting center. He’ll likely start next season there, too. But Cooper developed more through the course of last season and would seem to have the higher ceiling as a college center, largely due to his physical attributes. He’s taller, longer and moves well for a player of his size. There’s a reason Izzo always brings up Cooper’s ability in other sports: he has a unique athletic ability for a 7-footer.
While Cooper showed himself a capable defender in year one, now it will be about rounding out his game: being a threat on offense and being better on the boards – Sissoko was Michigan State’s best big man in that category last year.
But given where Cooper started his year at Michigan State and where he ended it, there’s reason to be excited about what he can do in year two.

In my totally untrained eye and worthless ability to evaluate, I think he gets his minutes cut next year if he doesn't have a monster off season and personal growth. He was a perfect guy to get some of our kids a breather. Never could dominate a game but didn't ever give one away while out there. Seems like a great kid and I hope he grows. Should have never picked #5 and that number needs to be retired.
