Could this be true? We decided against using the ball that the tournament was gonna use. Big Ten said screw it we're using our ball. Then when the tournament starts, every big ten team has to get used to a new ball.

Someone still has to explain to me, why any school wouldn’t use the exact same basketball that was going to be used in the NCAA tournament. Ask Rutgers and Maryland and Purdue winning at home during the season is more important.

I would. But, there are plenty of teams that win games in the Tournament that use a different ball during the season.

I get it. But as a coach you really get down to the minutia of details. It seems to me that’s not a small detail. It’s an obvious one. I wonder if it’s contracts?

This conversation reminds me of the scene in Hoosiers when they walk in the gym that the championship game is going to be played in and they are all awed by the size of everything. The coach breaks out a tape measure to show them the dimensions of the court and hoop and everything is all the same. My high school coach used to do the same thing as not all lily white suburban gyms are the same but we all had to play the same game on the same court.

It doesn’t fucking matter. If you can’t win because the ball is different, you weren’t good enough to win.

If he had to get in his car and drive to Detroit, and then Chicago and up to Grand Rapids and over to Muskegon and up to Cheboygan and back down to Midland that piece of shit, donut getter better have them there by 8:30.

I’m guessing there are one or two of those guys on staff that would have sprinted out the door and used their own money to fill their gas tanks.

Did you see the video about the new 3D printed balls? Pretty intriguing, and no reason balls would ever be different in terms of bounce, inflation, grip, etc. A ball would bounce the same in Miami, Florida as it does in Denver, Colorado.

I would guess we're contracted to use Nike Basketballs for home games, and March Madness/NCAA uses Wilson (also under contract). I would also guess we're practicing with the Wilson balls now (if there is a noticeable difference).
