Looked like he was looking for a quick pass back. But it got fucked up. Similar ending to ours. That's a shame.

I was only half paying attention, but it looked like a pretty shitty game from both sides. I lot of Nowell hero ball.

I'm pulling for Few and Gonzaga. He deserves a title.

FAU is pretty good for a 9 seed.
They are pretty good period. Glad they took out K-state and their smug smurf

Is parity a good thing? It’s a sliding scale if you ask me greenway. On one end you have something like European soccer where it’s always the same 3 teams winning. On the other you have something like the nhl where it’s a random crapshoot every year. Neither is really ideal as a fan of you ask me. Some amount of parity is good, but if you have so much parity that no team can ever really consistently win then you’re taking away a compelling part of the game.
Why do we hate Duke? Do we know any Duke fans personally? Do we hate the bells on their campus? Is their mascot sacrilege? No, it’s because they’ve won the championship consistently and regularly beaten our brains in. When you do finally get over that hump and beat them like in 2019 then it’s really really fun and there’s that extra flavor to it. Ultimate parity turns every big win into just like the Marquette game. It’s nice, it’s fun, but in 4 years is it really very memorable?

My sense, listening to our game, was that KS was playing the game of their lives, and based on some of their statistics verses their averages and play in the games just before they played MSU seem to suggest that was the case, very low turnovers verse their average, for instance.
Playing MSU and winning took the fire out of their belly, thus, even though their point guard was still playing beyond his abilities, the supporting cast came back to earth.

I think with parity we get to see who the best coach is. If there is truly an evening out of talent in college basketball, I like our chances with Izzo.

This may be true, however, due to the "playing way over their heads" factor it is questionable that Izzo wins it all again, for most Izzo teams play at their potential, consistently, which is his coaching talent.

Rooting for loyola Chicago to beat Kentucky is fun. Watching loyola Chicago get to the final four by beating st Mary’s, creighton, George Mason, and Princeton is boring.
The interest appears to increase, via TeeVee ratings, with name recognition, I fear you are correct that without that ratings fall off.

Agree. We are now lacking heros and villains.Teams or players to root for or against. Few/Timme were the last in my average college hoops fan opinion. Nobody knows FAU or SDSt. If you could name a player or coach from their team before the tourney, you're a rarity.. ? One or two of those is compiling, a great 8 full of them, nor so much.
UConn, Texas and Gonzaga are big names. But only the Zags still have a brand name coach and player. Dan Hurley is prob the only coach/player left I could name. But if it wasn't for his brother, would I gaf? Would I know/remember that going into the tournie? Probably not on both.
And I disagree that the games were hood yesterday. KState looked like they were out of gas. Nowell went hero ball, which got old. FAU won with their big, but hardly looked like a dominate player. KState was just too small. It just didn't look like top 10 teams playing to me. It felt like a rando regular season game. I hate to go all ratings guy, but this will likely be the lowest rated great 8/final 4 in a while
I'm sure OTPT and Nigel will disagree, but you're also in the 1% of college hoops fans that watches every game.
I do agree there is an opportunity for someone to emerge. Most of the Blue Bloods are down. Opportunity for Izzo to pounce.

I think we will find this year is an outlier in the grand scheme of things. Here is next years leaders for recruits:

Michigan State 5: 2 4: 2 3: 0 2: 0. 67.84.
Connecticut 5: 1 4: 3 3: 1 2: 0. 67.49.
Memphis 5: 1 4: 4 3: 2 2: 0. 66.17.
Ohio State 5: 0 4: 3 3: 1 2: 0. 65.56.
But stop with the narrative “If Duke isn’t good it’s bad for college basketball”. Fuck Duke. Kentucky and Duke have recruiting classes coming in that are a different level than anyone else. Kentucky especially. Cal is due to put it all together. If Walker stays, we're going to have a very good team.
I watched the end of the FAU game. Couldn't find a good movie to settle on. Flipped channels all day. Gonzaga game was over early. Timme's 4th foul was kind of BS. FAU is a decent story line, but it's not going to pull in that many viewers.
Dutcher (SD State Coach) is/was dirty. He was with Fisher at UM. So, I'm OK with him being the bad guy and getting beat.

But fau and San Diego state can’t replace unc in the national landscape. There’s a slot for them, it’s Gonzaga’s currently. They can replace them. And Kansas can be replaced as a perennial power just like in football where clemson supplanted usc and Georgia took over for I dunno oklahoma maybe… but it would need to be like Indiana or Kansas st that takes over the Goliath role from Kansas, not creighton.
In football terms, you absolutely can carry on as normal if Michigan state supplants Ohio state as the dominant Midwest team. You cannot if it’s Marshall. I hope this clears things up for you.

Can I ask how we are “carrying on as normal” ?
I’m not following this. I didn’t give a rats ass when Miami fell off as a dominant football team. Or when Shula was leading Bama.
I guess I’m asking are you guys worried about tv ratings? Or worried about your own interest? Because I honestly could not care less about tv ratings. And my interest does not ebb and flow with Alabama football strength or Duke basketball prowess. It’s directly tied to MSU. So I guess I’m not following all y’all’s point here.
Heroes? MSU football and basketball villains? Any team they’re playing. Keep it simple.

I wasn't specifying any particular brand name, nor any talking heads POV.
Afterall Izzo has made MSU a brand name, too.
Dantonio was on his way to do that until he was knifed in the back, partly of his own accord, via a really bad hire and a really bad recruiting class after all its legal troubles.
All I was saying was in response to what the NCAA basketball post season might become.
It is not a value judgement of future events, just speculation.

Yes, it’s just important that they exist. The name doesn’t matter. Like I said, David needs Goliath. A bunch of David’s slinging rocks at each other and missing wildly because they are terrible at this is boring.

I agree. Most of it boils down to the sportswriters and sportscasters wanting the teams that were on top when they were kids to be on top again. Fuck them. Any program can build a brand by winning over time. And for those who care about TV ratings, the ratings will come after the brands are built and those programs remain successful.

But stop with the narrative “If Duke isn’t good it’s bad for college basketball”. Fuck Duke. And just sign in below if you were sad Michigan football sucked and Dantonio was calling his shots against them. Fuck Michigan football fuck ND football. Fuck all of them. I could not care less and I’ll still be watching.
I agree. Most of it boils down to the sportswriters and sportscasters wanting the teams that were on top when they were kids to be on top again. Fuck them. Any program can build a brand by winning over time. And for those who care about TV ratings, the ratings will come after the brands are built and those programs remain successful.
But them remaining successful is the whole point and what we’re talking about. The initial point was that parity is good. I disagree, because it means that they don’t remain successful year over year for a decade and those brands don’t get built. Every year is just some different set of random teams you don’t care about winning the championship.

I hope this clears things up for you.AvgMSUJoe wrote:So, Duke wasn't Duke pre K... they were St John's or St Mary's.
Now Duke is Duke... your perception of "name" is irrelevant. If you don't care, so be it. Enough bandwagon fans will jump the St John's train if they hire the next K. (Shit, post Izzo we might become Illinois or Minnesota... who knows)
Yes, it’s just important that they exist. The name doesn’t matter. Like I said, David needs Goliath. A bunch of David’s slinging rocks at each other and missing wildly because they are terrible at this is boring.
But what if your David’s are running the court making threes throwing shots at each other taking body blows giving them back? It’s not the actual game for you, it’s the Jersey.
And we all love when a FDU beats Purdue( except if it’s middle Tennessee state). But I still dig a great fun game to watch regardless of Jersey. Or I do something around the house.
