Student-athletes do not have to ask permission from their coaches or university to enter the portal, nor does entering mean a player must leave their previous school. There is a “withdrawn” tag within the portal database that shows if a player opts to return. However, schools are not mandated to keep a player on scholarship once they enter the portal.
247 - The Portal Rules
Looks like the player takes the risk of their "existing" team not taking them back.

Most of these kids need to realize the free ride to get a degree is way more important than them having a delusional shot about making the league

Most of those kids have probably been the best player on the court or in the field most of their lives. Most probably have family or friends that tell them they will make it. Its a tough place to be. There probably aren't many 20 and under 'kids' who don't believe that with the right coaching or the right circumstances they can make it. I'm guessing the grad numbers being so low are because most of those that are still around probably know they don't have much of a shot but they can finish their degree. Also the grad transfers seem to be more sought out, probably because a coach knows what they are getting at that point.aualum06 wrote:AvgMSUJoe wrote:Hopefully this is on the first page of the NCAA handbook they give to every kid. This, getting a player for at the most 2 years means the coach has to really see immediate help.

The NCAA actually does study and report this stuff. Â Especially male student athletes are commonly delusional (not hyperbole). Â Here's a link to the 2020 study results for Division 3. Â Division 3!
https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/research/goals/2020D3RES_GOALS2020con.pdf
28% of D3 basketball and 15% of D3 football players think there is a chance they will play professionally. Â In 2021 there were 6 total former D3 players on NFL rosters.
https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2021-09-02/every-dii-and-diii-player-2021-nfl-roster
If you look at the D1 survey you learn that at least some D1 football athletes are actually students.

Re: Transfer Portal Numbers
I guess I would want to start at exactly who are these 817 players? They’re not power 5 (4? Power The Big Schools? Whatever) players. I mean some probably are but I bet a large majority of those end up playing somewhere once they accept they have to go to the MAC. You don’t see foster loyer or rocket watts not finding places. So we’re probably taking about guys from morehead state and such, who in a lot of cases I bet still will be able to go back to their school that doesn’t have quite the same competition for roster spots.Â
Further, I can’t find anything that says there were 1800 people in the transfer portal. I can find 1100. Are they including women to inflate that? I don’t know how transferring works out there.
Anyway I dunno. Sounds to me that someone was trying to make a point and massaged some shit and conveniently citations are ignored so you can’t verify their infographic

Or "I will pay you $20k/game played"...

I recall when NIL first came out I read NIL could not be tied to performance or even where you go to school. It is supposed to be an ‘endorsement deal’ not ‘pay for play’. I don’t know who makes or enforces this garbage, but I blame Turtleneck.
NIL programs need henchmen to keep kids inline after they take a bag.

He was one of the guys that stuck around after Smith left, so it wasn't likely he would come here, but IIRC, OSU talked up him staying loyal to OSU after Smith left.

Maybe they were too busy last fall but Dion threw the o line under the bus last year. I guess Boyd thinks he can change that mind set. Either I respect him for his moxie or I’m shaking my head at his foolishness.
