Basketball team concerns

As Michigan develops solidarity and confidence in Europe msu is still trying to put together an actual team with enough players to field a squad. Concerns? A once mighty program seems to be losing its luster.   can a roster with transfers from obscure programs win a big ten?

Not this year. Not enough talent down low, especially with kaminski leaving.

Unless costello turns into a consistent offensive threat on the low block, it's going to be very difficult to create shots for the guards.

Also, who can care about that right now? Football season is upon us.

I'm curious about the grand experiment. With all the dismissals over recent years, and top level recruits heading elsewhere because Izzo won't play the game... I don't think he's getting on the good side of the handlers.

I like this team. I like being able to assume that it's a relatively clean program. Hopefully Izzo's swan song will be another title, then a graifying exit to Sinatra's "My Way" (and a good book).

I'm starting to come to your way of thinking here. Tom Izzo has not done anything during his tenure here to indicate that he knows what he's doing. Trust is a big factor in who I root for and I just can't trust a guy like Tom Izzo who just can't seem to pull it together.

Will Levert be the next Wolvie to step it up and to carry the blue to their third b10 title?

It's all smoke and mirrors DWags. Until I see some actual results ON THE COURT, I think I'll hold judgement. Plus, we know he can win against the easy competition, but can he win when it matters? That's what I'm waiting to find out.

Fine, I'll take the bait. I think Izzo is a heck of a coach, and I'll trust him, but I do have some concerns going forward just because of recruiting, as it seems like he doesn't want to "play the game." I think we'll always have good teams under Izzo, as he's proven he doesn't need elite recruits to compete, but I think if we want a third national title, we're going to need to adapt a bit better to today's recruiting scene.

Sounds like you want Izzo to start cheating.

None of those programs are better than MSU.

And I wouldn't trade Izzo for Calipari for a national title every year.

I think the problem is Izzo needs to adjust to the times and upgrade his offense.

He needs to figure out a way to reduce the fouling, and to get all 5 guys on the floor involved in the scoring.

Looks indeed like we're going to have a bad year of basketball but a good year of bashing Izzo. Same people who will bash him are the same people who wanted Narduzzi fired. Probably the same people who wanted Izzo fired in the 90's.

I agree with this. The writing is on the wall.

Just don't know how we can even come close to replacing Payne and Harris. And we didn't even win the Big Ten with them.

I'm sick and tired of watching guys like Schilling and Costello mug a guy under the basket and then looking up in disbelief that the ref would call the foul. Sorry but the game has evolved, the days of putting football pads on and beating people up in the paint are over.

It's time to recruit players that can defend without contact and hand checks, shoot, drive and play above the rim.

I want to subscribe to the Tanner panic newsletter - because I'm afraid I've missed you concerns for the hockey team/program, WHoops, and how is the tennis team looking for this year?

I would bet 20 bucks we miss the tournament. Last year was brutal and the play defense and grind it out does not work anymore. Recruit some shooters and worry less about putting on football pads inside the paint. Sick of watching us shoot 28 percent while the other team can't miss.

Izzo realizes that the game is changing, and he's recruiting more offense oriented players (Eron Harris and Bryn Forbes). Those guys aren't noted for the defense...at all.

I think we'll see a more wide open approach, and everyone will have the green light. Last year Costello didn't have the green light to shoot from the outside, just as Payne didn't his first 2 years (though both showed that game in HS).

A healthy Dawson is the X factor this season. If he plays like he did to end the year, he'll carry us to the S16 by himself.
