Dystopian future...
Just finished another best seller with the "dystopian future" as the backdrop.
WTF? Seriously? Zombie apocalypse (Walking Dead), 'YA' Series and Movies (Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner, etc.), Other books (California, Ready Player One... others.)
Why is this shit so prevalent in today's society?
What ever happened to a Utopian future? Never read books about stuff being better 30-50 years down the road...
Getting depressing.

I agree. Definitely a modern thing... The future in '1984' looked much more promising.

Yeah because books where there's no conflict and everybody's happy are so interesting.

I know there were others in the past ... but it seems much more prevalent now.

Why does it have to be dystopian? Why is there ALWAYS a total crash of govt and modern society... MSU isn't teaching a course of what to do when all disease is cured from the future enhancements in stem cells... But they got Zombies covered.
There was that TV show where the nanobots ate all the electricity too....(lost me after the first season)

I've read a theory that ASOIAF (Game of Thrones) is supposed to be the story after the 'happily ever after'.

Star trek isn't dystopian. I like star trek.

What's the point of placing a story in the future if it isn't technology based (star trek) or dystopian? I mean, if everything is going just swell why not just have it in the now?

Re: Dystopian future...
I took a pop culture class (with the late Dr. Maurice Crane, RIP). I recall him saying that movies, tv shows, and books take on darker, scarier themes during times of economic and financial stress, during global strife/wars, etc. It used to be almost exclusively with outer space aliens and monsters. Bogey man-types that we can blame for our real life problems. When things are stable, those themes wane because life is good.

I don't know. There was Night of the Living Dead, Soylent Green, THX-1138, Logans Run, (I don't know if A Clockwork Orange qualifies as dystopian or not) just to name a few oldies off the top of my head. I don't know if it's any more prevalent now than it was then. I think the main difference is just the fact that ideas move through culture so much faster today than back then. I think the faster flow of information is the main reason you're seeing so much more of it now.
