What do those years have in common?
Those were years an unranked MSU team beat a top 10 UM team. (see Rexrode)
Tell me why this can't happen the other way around this year.

Because SCum players and coaches didn't respect MSU players and coaches and didn't take them seriously. In their mind MSU would have to get lucky to beat them. Their arrogance allowed for MSU teams to occasionally beat them. Their arrogance was especially high when they were highly ranked.
This MSU team takes SCum players VERY seriously and Dantonio won't allow the kind of condescending arrogance that was commonplace for SCum teams of the past. That doesn't mean that it can't happen, it just means that MSU won't beat itself, SCum will have to beat MSU by out playing us.

I am pretty sure Lloyd and Bo took this game seriously. As for the players, I hope you are right. I wonder because they are "kids".

Don't get me wrong, I think they all took the game seriously. What I'm saying is that they all had such an arrogant belief in their own superiority that they had no respect for anything MSU and the Mike Hart attitude was prevalent with them for years before he ever made that statement Bo and Lloyd included.Herbie Green wrote:

Agree with the question and the response. In short our arrogance against neb and Purdue didn't cost us and well definitely will not repeat against uofm. Best thing for both programs is if we annilate them so they can fire the current regime and move on

Re: 1990, 1993, 1995 and 2001
Obviously anything can happen in sports, but here is why those years were different:
A) Those were up-cycle years for MSU. We went to bowl games each of those seasons, which were hardly a given. UM this year is in a down cycle and may be fortunate to make a bowl after 4 straight years going to one.
B) MSU wants it more, even now with rankings reversed. Does anyone here hate UM any less now than 7+ years ago? They're still entitled little fuckwads. The team knows that just like every other Spartan. It is a mentality that UM may never have.
This should be more similar to 02 or 06. People thought MSU might rally around each other for those game that meant so much to MSU, but it takes more than that to correct a trainwreck.

A) MSU records going into those games:
1990 1-2-1
1993 2-1
1995 4-3-1
2001 4-2
Those hardly look like "upticks" at the time the games were played. We were also coming off losing seasons in all but 1990. A loss to UM, which looked almost certain, could have sent MSU in a tailspin just as UM faces today. UM might be a dumpster fire according to fans but I wouldn't be surprised if their team came to play inspired as they did against an undefeated OSU team last season.
B) Like I said, I would like to believe that. We know how we feel. But seven years is a long time for these players. Pretty much all they know is beating UM on a regular basis. A coach can preach it all he wants but hopefully he doesn't need to apply any special motivation tactics. Hopefully it really is ingrained in them and they want to kick the ever lasting shit out of them for a full 60 minutes.

I've often felt that pre-Dantonio years that we were under rated and they were over rated (as usual). I don't think UM was all that great in '93, '95, '99, and '01. They might have been good, but not great. And we were better than what most people thot.
Hell, even last year, I think UM was in the Top 20 when we played them. Truth was, they weren't even a Top 50 team. I'm not sure we were even ranked then. Those fuckwads are always rated MUCH higher than what they really are. This year is no different. This year they truly suck and it'll show this Saturday. Fuck 'em.

Re: 1990, 1993, 1995 and 2001
1990:
Game 1: MSU Tied Syracuse who finished 7-4-2.
Syracuse had played 2 Games already. So that wasn't too bad to tie that one.
Game 2: MSU lost by 1 ****ing point to #1 ND AT ND. (19-20)
Game 3: Kicked Rutgers ass
Game 4: Lost a frustrating game to eventual Rose Bowl Rep Iowa (7-12)
It was real windy and a defensive battle. I remember Iowa threw all passes toward the direction of the wind. ( wind was 20mph and blew west to east so I'm remembering Iowa threw toward their bench on every pass and Hayden Fry smugly said he did it on purpose and MSU never figured it out )
Game 5: I was there. No: 1 vs. No One signs and T-shirts everywhere. MSU brought it.
28-27
Deal With It
Game 6: Let down vs Illinois but strangely, Illinois coach said after game they kicked winning field goal by mistake. Makovic said he thought he was 10 yards closer than they were. Had he known how far out they were, he said he would have punted.
MSU went on to tie for Big Ten Title.

Re: 1990, 1993, 1995 and 2001
Those records were definitely upticks at that point in each season, except for 90 (where it proved to be an up cycle year as we shared the B10 title). Anything above .500 at any point in the season was pretty much a sign that it was a good season (relative to others). That was not an era where we would load up on non-conf cupcakes to get off to a 3-1 or 4-0 start. Losses wouldn't have sent the seasons spiraling. In most cases we lost the next game, so it got evened out.Herbie Green wrote:

Its not about the coach preaching the douchebaggery at UM. The players live it. They see the constant pre-season hype, the recruiting championships, the September Heismans most years, and they come into contact with piece of shit UM fans on the street. And they saw what the one win in 2012 brings out in them.

Those MSU teams weren't flat out dumpster fires like UM currently is with their lame duck coach. UM dead last in yards per game in conference. Their players will quit on Saturday like they did last year. Both Devins won't be able to leave SS fast enough once the clock hits triple zeros. This UM team is done. No fire. No intensity. It might be close for a few quarters, but MSU will pound UM.
There is zero %, and I mean zero % that MSUs coaches and players aren't chomping at the bit to kick UMs ass.

Well I think I am convinced, mostly from Dantonio's quotes and from UM acting like pussies. As an MSU fan I dont think I have ever conceded defeat going into this game - maybe 2002 but I might still have been dumb enough to think we had a shot.
But this is the least worried I have ever been and I am always worried and that attitude has me a little worried.
