people seem to think that college sports is some pious entity.. and are shocked when they hear things like this happening.

It was a done deal on both sides. It wasn't like. "We really want you here but we may have some sholorship issues." which is what most coaches do, it was "you are our guy." until two days prior. He wasn't even talking to other schools. It's different the way he handled it than most do.

Its a very risky move by Petrino. That is easy to do negative recruiting against. Hey, you're thinking of playing for this guy? Better make sure, because he told a guy that there was a spot for him, until 2 days prior to signing day. Me? You can check my past record, my word is my bond and if I accept your commitment you will have a spot open on the team.

Why didn't he just over sign and cut down this spring? I think we gave out three more than we had. Three guys aren't going to be with the team next fall.

Agree 100%.

I don't see anything wrong with this, it's a good life lesson for the kid.

The timing certainly sucked, but let's look at the situation.

Louisville had 3 junior DBs declare for the NFL draft. Losing depth like that at one position isn't very common, but revoking scholarship offers is. As they said, the priority quickly became bringing in DBs. If this kid or someone else didn't get his verbal offer revoked, someone else already on the team would have been processed.

This is why recruits should take their visits, or at least maintain a cordial relationship with other coaching staffs.
