What is your favorite BBQ side?
Some common options include: potato salad, baked beans, corn on the cob, pasta salad, etc. For me I have to go with potato salad with bacon.

Corn Souffle all day long.
Think cornbread but a little soggy because its loaded down with butter and honey.

Cornbread rules. Made some amazing custard filled cornbread the first time I used the smoker (well, the GF made it) and it was just about my favorite thing about the entire meal.

OP, is the slaw and BBQ sauce a given and we're talking about what else?

Disagree somewhat. If it's good barbeque you want to be able to taste the meat...not a ton of sauce. Though I did scratch make some mustard vinegar sauce that was quite good.

Big fan of vinegar sauce. Basically good cider vinegar, brown sugar, salt, pepper and some spices.

What kind of smoker do you have?

It's a Masterbuilt gas one. Not this exact one, but very close.

For my first time, the ribs got very high marks from my friends.

Nice! I have a couple Big Green Eggs which I've had for a long time. Love 'em. Whatever works.
Re: What is your favorite BBQ side?
Funny story about smokers. Bought my dad one for his birthday two years ago. Octoberish. It's a gas grill/smoker combo. Cold weather hit early, didn't use it, and then I moved to Cali that January. So I never got to use it. Damn shame.

Anyone have experience with the Masterbuilt electric smokers? Can usually find them on sale for $200. Reasonable entry level smoker?

Small BBQ place near me makes a fantastic BBQ Spaghetti.
Also no love for Mac & Cheese? Good homemade Mac is hard to beat.

My smoker seems great. But as I mentioned, it's gas. Not sure about electric positives or negatives. I would think as long as you have access to an outlet it would work fine. And perhaps they're harder to heat up quickly like with gas, but I'm guessing.

Yeah, I didn't mean that as drowning in sauce, the point was more that I'd rather fill up on the BBQ than sides.Chitown_Badger wrote:

Certainly don't have the coin or room for the one I bought my dad. Don't have room for anything, really. Perils of living in a 1BR with a tiny patio.

I don't consider that a side. I consider that a necessary ingredient in either a sammich or an open-face.

Re: What is your favorite BBQ side?
Even though it's rabbit food, good slaw is always a great side. The only problem is it's hard to find any place that does it good. Mac and cheese is another great option if you do it right, but once again most places suck. Thus why we've come to a general consensus that cornbread is the best side, and not even Iowanians or Nebraskanites could mess it up.

Re: What is your favorite BBQ side?
BBQ sides are a waste unless they are really well made, just less room in your gut for that delicious meat. I'm not a big fan of baked beans, but ones that are true BBQ are damn good. The chunks of fat thrown in for flavor, the chunks of bacon, brown sugar, etc. Oh, and real mashed potatoes with gravy made from all the drippings and scraps of meat.

Re: What is your favorite BBQ side?
If I go out to a BBQ joint I usually get cornbread, baked beans, green beans, mac and cheese, or sweet potato fries. If I'm just grilling at home I'll usually throw on some corn on the cobb or some asparagus.

You bought your dad a smoker. And you're upset you didn't get to use it. Next time just get him a bowling ball that is engraved with Homer.

Know a guy that lives his electric but not sure of the brand. Pretty sure it's not a Masterbuilt.
