A Flint funeral home confirmed that Herbert Cleaves, father of Mateen, died on Thursday. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Herbert Cleaves was 72. Mateen's mother, Frances, died in 2007. They were integral in establishing MSU's family identity under Tom izzo.

Herbert Cleaves, the father of former Michigan State star Mateen, died Thursday in Flint. He was 72.

Herbert and Mateen's mother, Frances, were integral in establishing and fostering the MSU basketball program's family culture under coach Tom Izzo. Frances Cleaves died in 2007, and Izzo named a room for her outside of the Spartans' locker room at the Breslin Center to serve as a gathering place for players' relatives and friends.

Herbert Cleaves also had been a member of the Flint School Board and was a longtime community activist in his hometown.
