Spartan Swill Writing Staff - MSU Women Win Big Ten Track and Field Title..

over the course of a three days on the banks of the Red Cedar, the MSU women's track team was able to prove once and for all what we all have known for some time now: Michigan State women are fast.

With senior Leah O'Connor leading the charge, the MSU women won by a comfortable margin. For people unfamiliar with that term, it has nothing to do with wearing pants that have an elastic waist. It means that they won with many points to spare. O'Connor proved to be the class of the field as she won both the 1,500 and the 5,000. For those of you who find the metric system puzzling, this converts to a distance that would prompt most of you to drive.



Yes, starters pistols were fired, hurdles were effortlessly vaulted over, orange slices were consumed, and svelte young men and women dazzled us with very public demonstrations of the limits of the human body.. All in the shadows of Spartan Stadium - where autumnal magic occurs. It caused this humble MSU graduate and staff writer for the finest MSU athletic message board in the land to become overwhelmed with pride. It was a wonderful weekend to be in East Lansing.

I saw that while flipping channels this weekend. Thought it was pretty neat.

in all seriousness, the MSU women have a stable of distance runners. NCAA cross country champions tend to have that effect on the 1500, 5000, 10,000 come spring.

NCAA Track and Field Championships start today in Eugene. Eight Spartans have qualified and will compete.

I'd say the two most likely to make some noise will be Jenna Magness in the 10,000 (the final is Thursday night) and Morgan Beadlescomb in the 5,000 (final on Friday evening).

Earlier this season, Beadlescomb ran the 9th fastest 5,000 in the history of the NCAA. Read that again. In the HISTORY of thr NCAA.

It'll be fun.

Also, sidenote, Sophia Franklin also is in Eugene for the women's pole vault. Multi-Big Ten champ and MSU record holder. Known that kid since she was, like, 5 when she and our daughter took dance together for years in East Lansing. Good kid.

Tonight, John Petruno runs the 1,500 final, Morgan Beadlescomb in the 5,000 meter final. Beadlescomb has the ability to mix it up in the front. Will be fun to watch.

Michigan State concludes action at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday night, when John Petruno (men's 1500m) and Morgan Beadlescomb (men's 5000m) both compete in their respective finals. Petruno will run at 6:12 p.m. PT, while Beadlescomb is scheduled for a 7:55 p.m. PT start time.

The 1500 is almost a sprint these days. Petruno finishes 9th. Top 10 guys were within a second of each other.

Kentre Patterson from East Lansing HS, via Ohio State, finishes 6h in the 110 hurdles

Morgan led at the bell lap. Fought hard, finished 2nd.

Sophia Franklin finishes 14th in the women's pole vault at the USA Track and Field Championships.

Brutal conditions in Eugene (calling for mid-90's as a high), they moved both the men's and women's 5,000 up to this morning. It was still in the low-mid 80's.  Jenna Magness ran 16:13, very pedestrian time for these ladies, but she was only 24 seconds off the winner. The conditions were  not conducive for fast times.

As for the men's 5,000, Morgan Beadlescomb ran 13:24, finishing 9th, 24 seconds behind the national champion.

Overall, MSU track and field, especially distance events (and XC), are in great shape.
