MSU women's hoops wants to run with Powers, frosh Green

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Suzy Merchant has seen the triangle-and-two defense plenty over the years, because she watches a lot of high school basketball on the recruiting trail.

The Michigan State women's basketball coach had not seen the defense — which involves a three-player zone inside and two others playing man-to-man against the opposition's top two players — in college basketball, until she went through a season with a depleted roster and two stars.

"I've never been triangle-and-two'd in college until last year," Merchant said Thursday during Big Ten basketball media day. "I would welcome anybody to try that this year, because that's not gonna go very well (for them)."

Akyah Tayor coming back for her last year of eligibility says she didn't burn any bridges and Coach Merchant doesn't hold grudges against players who leave her program for what the coach deems the right reasons.

Jasmine Hines concussion(s) was bigger than Williams 4th attempt to play. Hines gave them a space eater who can get points in the paint and took care of other team's bulliies playing "tough defense" on scorers like Powers with monster picks that shook the floor.

Akyah Taylor's return a big boost for MSU women's hoops

EAST LANSING - There’s a lot of excitement for Suzy Merchant as she looks over her Michigan State women’s basketball team.

The ninth-year Spartan coach has a team that is healthy – a refreshing change from past seasons.

She has depth and one of the nation’s top scoring tandems in Aerial Powers and Tori Jankoska returning.

She has a couple of new true point guards to set up Powers and Jankoska.

And she also has an X-factor type player that she recruited a few years ago back in the program in Akyah Taylor.

MSU women's hoops preview: Powers, Jankoska not alone

EAST LANSING – The first time Aerial Powers touched the ball in the World University Games in South Korea this past summer, she was driving toward the basket when she — inexplicably — passed the ball!

It may have been the first pass the Michigan State junior had made since the end of her freshman season.

“It felt like it,” Powers said, laughing.

Passing wasn’t much of an option last season for Powers, unless teammate Tori Jankoska was on the receiving end.

The roster of MSU women’s team was so depleted that the Spartans finished the season with only five scholarship players in uniform and needed a refugee from the volleyball team just in case someone was in foul trouble.

Because of that Powers felt compelled to shoot more than she would have under normal circumstances and finished the season averaging 21.9 points and 12.1 rebounds.

But this season things will be dramatically different. Help has arrived for Powers and Jankoska (17.5 points per game).

I think I saw earlier that MSU trailed by only two with 1:33 to go, too bad they couldn't hang down the stretch, but they should be fun to watch this year.

Correct. It was 77-75 with just under 1:30 to go. In CFB this is called a quality loss. After last season, so great to see this team hanging with one of the best teams in the country. MSU plays top 25 Louisville next. I think this team will compete for a Big 10 title this season.

College hoops: MSU women unable to close out Baylor again

FREEPORT, Bahamas –

For the second straight year, Baylor found itself facing a double-digit deficit against Michigan State.

And just like last season, the Lady Bears rallied to win.

Nina Davis scored 30 points and No. 5 Baylor overcame an early 12-point deficit to beat the No. 20 Spartans, 84-76, on Saturday to win the Junkanoo Jam.

Last season, Baylor found itself down 13 points to Michigan State in a tournament in Orlando at the half before rallying to the victory.

Niya Johnson and Alexis Jones each added 19 points for the Lady Bears (6-0), who gave up the game's first 12 points to Michigan State before rallying. Johnson was 12-for-13 from the free throw line and ha

"Niya's amazing," Davis said. "Like I keep telling people, she's under the radar."

Tori Jankoska scored 23 points to lead Michigan State (4-1). Branndais Agee and Aerial Powers each added 16 for the Spartans.

College hoops: MSU women top Oakland for third win in row

Jasmine Hines scored a career-high 21 points, and No. 25 Michigan State beat Oakland, 82-62, on Sunday at the O'rena in Rochester for its third straight victory.

Hines scored 12 points in the first half, which ended with the Spartans (7-2) leading, 43-30. She scored the first four points of the game .

Tori Jankoska's three-pointer with 3:12 left in the first quarter put Michigan State up, 19-7, and the lead would remain in double figures. The Spartans' largest lead was 24 with 7:09 left.

Branndais Agee had her first double-double this season with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans, who led, 47-19, on the boards.

Aerial Powers scored 17 points and Jankoska 11.
