The real Big Ten football coaching battle isn't between Jim Harbaugh and everybody else. It's between Dantonio and Meyer. It's between Michigan State and Ohio State. They're the dominant programs in the conference.

Harbaugh has done a brilliant job of marketing himself and the Wolverines' football reclamation project. But it's not a coincidence that when the Free Press asked a dozen 12- and 13-year-old middle school football players participating in the Sound Mind Sound Body camp for the one coach they most wanted to meet, 11 of the 12 said Meyer or Dantonio.


Harbaugh got one vote.

"That's interesting," Meyer said, "but I shouldn't be surprised, considering that 12- and 13-year-olds probably get everything they need to know about from their cell phones. They're only going to know what they've seen recently in football."

And that's Ohio State winning the Big Ten's first football national championship in 12 years, after stunning both Alabama and Oregon in the inaugural playoff. And that's Michigan State finishing in the top five in the national rankings for the second straight year and winning 11 games in four of the last five seasons.

"It's all about exposure," Dantonio said. "It certainly helps us that there's a young core of football players growing up having experienced more success from Michigan State.

But that doesn't mean that we can rest on our accomplishments. We must keep pushing for more."
