Cars (formerly a hybrid cars thread)
A guy down the street has a really sweet looking silver sedan in the drive. Never saw anything like it before. Looked it up. It's a Fisker Karma
Only produced in 2011-12, then the company filed for bankruptcy. Only a couple thousand built. A Chinese company bought Fisker and is supposed to start building them again soon.

Is that the same Fisker that makes scissors?

Damn that's sharp. I want a Model S really bad, but can't justify the price tag right now.

Did I see $135K? Yeah, that would be hard to justify. Unless it doubles as a helicopter.

Wiki says Carlos Santana totaled one in Vegas a couple years ago after falling asleep at the wheel and hitting a couple parked cars. Maybe hybrids are too quiet...?InTenSity wrote:I've seen a couple here in Miami.

Fucking hippy owner prolly got too high during the last Grateful Dead tour to sell enough cucumber sandwiches to make the payment, let alone purchase enough carrot juice to put in the gay veggie fuel tank.

Re: Cars (formerly a hybrid cars thread)
Talked with sis and she said BIL sold his '08 Escape yesterday. He shopped for a new Maverick couple weeks ago but told they were unavailable. They went vehicle "shopping" today.
Turned out they passed a few dealerships and went straight to the Honda ship. Spent 5 hours there and he drove home in a new CRV hybrid.
Asked if they were going to get the house set up for charging. She said, "No, it's a hybrid."
Not wanting to crush that bit of excitement you get when acquiring a new vehicle, I didn't say anything.

I don’t the ins and outs of Hondas. Is it a plug-in hybrid or a hybrid? The later doesn’t need to be plugged it. It uses the gas engine and braking to regenerate the the battery.

New to the hybrid stuff...didn't know they are made both ways. Don't see the point of a non plug-in except the regenerative braking. Will have to ask if the thing has a charging port.Nordic wrote:I don’t the ins and outs of Hondas. Is it a plug-in hybrid or a hybrid? The later doesn’t need to be plugged it. Have had hybrids since 2007, plug ins started later than that. Chevy Volt was one of the first.
Had to go gas engine when a deer totaled the 2008 during the new vehicle shortages.
I'm waiting for the BEVs to roll out to the masses and for the charger networks to have better coverage before the next car if we can keep the 2012 hybrid going.

Re: Cars (formerly a hybrid cars thread)
I believe the only plug-in hybrid that Honda currently makes for the US market is a sedan (the Clarity).
Most plug in hybrids you can charge at a 110V outlet if you want. It is slow, but the battery on a plug-in hybrid is much smaller than an all electric vehicle, so it can typically be done overnight. You might want to opt to install a 220V charger though.

I think that is basically correct.
The first-generation hybrid system, (Honda, Toyota, Ford) was partly and engineering beta design to gain mass market experience with electric drive train components for the development of later generations of EV's, and partly a fuel economy enhancement. The Battery tech used was not for significant EV miles continuously. The first plug-in hybrids had the LI-Ion battery tech which originally allowed about 30 to 40 miles of pure electric drive, plug-in hybrids are still in that milage range, useful for running to the store or maybe commuting to work but not more than that. After that the gas engine takes over.
A dedicated (no other outlets or lights on the same breaker) 20 Amp 110 outlet is probably needed for charging.
