Looking forward to Michigan and Nebraska
We may well lose to Rutgers and Maryland, but they're pretty bad.
I have caught parts of UM and Braskypants games, but not much of either, and I don't pay a ton of attention when I'm watching non-MSU games.
What exactly does each team do well, and how do we match up? For those of you who have paid close attention to either.
I know UM supposedly has this badass defense but are they run stoppers, or pass stoppers or both? Do they rush the passer well with 4 down? Blitz? Haven't faced a great passing offense/QB? Is it because of the level of competition that they are playing? Do we think they can run the ball on us? Are they capable of taking advantage of our now undermanned secondary?
Same for Nebraska.
Anyone have any insight?

Jesus, man, grab some Captain and Diet Dr. Pepper and mellow out a bit, will you? That's a fuckball of a lot of questions for a Sunday night. You really need to calm down.
Me, I'm going to decide whether I want more red wine, more cheese, some Ben & Jerry's, or all three, and not open this thread until tomorrow.

I'm just curious. Everyone is super bullish on UM right now, and I started thinking about it. I wonder if they have any matchups that grade out favorably against us. I am curious about the same thing with Nebraska.

Good news is they do play so there will be no arguments.
Last week Fox Sports Feldman said umaa is ready to beat OSU in Columbus this November. Now some wags are saying MSU will lose in aa or Lincoln or both places.
The last umaa football coach to beat MSU in his first year was Fritz Crisler in 1938.
Oosterbaan, Elliot, Schembechler, Moeller, Carr, Rodriguez and Hoke all lost to MSU the first time they faced the Spartans.

I caught some of the UMvUM game on tape today. That game was mostly a shit show. Rudock sucks but once in awhile will make a play with his feet. it's hard to say how good they really are. Maryland fucking sucks. They dropped at least 5 easily catchable balls. Doing a quick search UM has played the 71st, 76th, 81st, 111th, 115th ranked offenses.

Re: Looking forward to Michigan and Nebraska
Yeah, I noticed that, too.
Thing is I'm not really sure that they have played an Offense that is equally capable of attacking through the air and the ground? And alternately they don't seem to be a threat at all to move the ball through the air. Again, this is all just based off of mostly hearsay so not sure how close I am. But if so the matchups seem to be pretty solid in our favor.
I know Armstrong can throw the ball so that worries me a bit.

Armstrong's deep ball + Nebs comebacks + Lincoln = more worried than scums qb that appears to be average at best

No and to date none of his wins matter. At MSU football coaches success is measured by win/loss vs umaa, Ohio State and PSU since we have gone to divisions in the Big Ten. Used to include ND but they don't want anything to do with MSU currently or the near future.
Harbaugh is measured by 2 games per year. If his teams lose to MSU and OSU in the same year 3 times in the next 5 years he's going to go back to the pro's because the adoration he's getting before facing either team will turn on a dime.

Which, while it may serve to make you feel better leading up to the game, is 100% completely irrelevant in every single way.

I don't need to feel better.
If you don't think that stat matters put your money on scum in 2 weeks and see if its gone by 7:30 PM October 17, 2015.
Hell, by the 16th they will be favored. Since you are betting against an irrelevant trend it will be easy money. Time to bet on scum.

The entire season to this point has been perfect. The scUM slappies are in an absolute frenzy that they can compete for National titles now, etc, etc. The Harbaugh wave is cresting.
The crash is going to be enormous as they lose 5 of their last 7 games. Somewhere, somehow, something will be said that triggers Harbaugh.....and he's coaching in the NFL at Indianapolis or Miami next year. The heartbreak in AA will be sweet and long lasting.

Well that's assinine.
I didn't say "it means Michigan is going to win." I said "its irrelevant."
Trends like that aren't really trends. You're arguing that games that happened in 1947, 1963, 1987, 1992, 2008 and 2011 (I just made up years) impact this year's game. They do not.
Trends like "basically every year ever the team that rushes for more yards wins the game so hopefully we do that" matter. Who won the game pretty world war ii does not.

Re: Looking forward to Michigan and Nebraska
Here is an interesting trend I found in the MSU-Rutgers series:
1988 Loss
1990 Win
1991 Loss
2003 Win
2004 Loss
2014 Win
2015 ?
1988 Loss
1990 Win
1991 Loss
2003 Win
2004 Loss
2014 Win
2015 ?

Nebraska blows. Michigan has only played one legit team and lost to them. If we avoid injury we roll both teams.

Nebraska does blow but Tommy Armstrong will challenge our secondary with arm punts and jump balls downfield every other pass. For UM we need to play with urgency on offense for all 4 quarters.

Re: Looking forward to Michigan and Nebraska
I think the Michigan game is going to be damn tough. Our offense sputters later in the game and their defense looks legit.
I'll also add that I think they are beating up on crappy opponents and I don't buy the Utah hype.

Re: Looking forward to Michigan and Nebraska
Depends on where Conklin, Keiler and Price are health wise. If you get 2 back, I feel good, if you get all 3 back I feel great. If you get 0 or 1 back, it's not good.
Defensively we match up well with them--our leaky secondary will be the hardest thing for them to exploit. Our front 4 will cause UM some problems as their OL is pretty average.
It's going to be a tough game as it stands right now. A lot could happen in 10 days, including a game against NU that is tougher than anyone imagined at the outset of the season.

Yeah but they have outscored the other opponents like 120 to 14 or something like that after the Utah game.

The UM game is going to be very tough, especially if we don't get some guys back by then.
