2015-16 NBA Preview: The Pistons Could Stop Being Terrible
I think Stanley Johnson is going to be a beast and they get to .500.
I think Stanley Johnson is going to be a beast and they get to .500.
It’s been a rough few years — really, almost a decade — for the Detroit Pistons, who haven’t had a winning season since the dissolution of their mid-2000s quasi-dynasty. And superficially, coach Stan Van Gundy’s first season at the helm last year wasn’t much better, resulting in a 32-50 record. But Detroit did markedly improve its point differential last season, to the point that the team scored exactly as many points per game as it gave up after the All-Star break. And the Pistons at least have some interesting pieces to work with now (not least of which is rookie Stanley Johnson), though they must also cope with the loss of free-agent big man Greg Monroe, who signed with the division-rival Bucks over the summer.
What’s in store for the 2015-16 Pistons, according to our CARMELO1 player projection system? The model expects them to go 38-44.

Not this year..
But. I do think the stones make the playoffs this year. Like Loose said, I feel like Stanley Johnson will surprise many, Reggie Jackson will play as well as he was at the end of last year, and Drummond will Drummond. I'm a big fan of KCP also.

Come on Detroit...close this out. Would be a huge first win in Atlanta a top 4 team in East.
Pistons have some young talent...fun to watch. Van Gundy is a solid coach. Best Pistons coach since Brown for sure.

NBA Overnight: The Divergent Nights of Stephen Curry and Anthony Davis
There were signs of a modern offense in Detroit last season during president-coach Stan Van Gundy’s first year at the helm: Detroit finished just outside the top 10 in 3-point attempts and took the league’s third-fewest midrange jumpers per game. But Van Gundy still had to deal with the first 28 games of Andre Drummond, Greg Monroe, and Josh Smith — and the lingering stench of their three bodies jammed airtight in a meat locker for too long.
With time, as we all expected, the fat has been trimmed. What Detroit has this season shares an uncanny resemblance to the most successful team of Van Gundy’s professional career: the 2008-09 Orlando Magic,

Anthony Davis didn't impress last night - but it's a long season and next game he'll make it a point to attack the paint more. He started off the game trying to prove he had that jump shot down.
Loved what I saw from the Stones, outside of some of the bench players. I'm looking at you Steve Blake. Illyasova hit some shots and we rebounded well. When does Jennings get back? Would love for him to be our 6th man.
Home opener tonight at 7:30..

Did you see his little Euro step finish? It was nice. Morris also made some key shots last night as well.

Jamie's blog: 5 reasons to be optimistic about Pistons
In Stan Van Gundy's first year on the job, the Pistons started 5-23.
Barring a 3-23 stretch starting Friday night against the Bulls, Year 2 under Van Gundy is off to a substantially better start. Week 1 shouldn't tell us all that much about the long term success of the team. But staying in the playoff race until the calendar flips over to December would be a welcome change as well.
There is simply no doubt that Van Gundy has a plan. He has focus. He has direction. The question remains whether or not he has the players to arrive at his desired destination and whether or not his plan is the right one to get this group of players there. Detroit doesn't have unbridled optimism for this version of the Pistons. Neither do NBA experts, most of whom have the Pistons missing the postseason for the seventh straight year. But there are some signs of hope, some reason for optimism. And they start with the fact that this is Year 2 of the Van Gundy era.

Seidel: Pistons' Gores can see something special brewing
Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores clapped his hands Wednesday night, standing on the sideline in the Palace, as his team was introduced before the home opener against the Utah Jazz.
It was like being in a spaceship. It was loud with bright flashing lights, and the air was filled with smoke, and Gores smiled and turned around and gave out high-fives.
Clearly, he likes this team.
Clearly, he likes the direction of this franchise under Stan Van Gundy.
"The biggest thing I believe in is what Stan is doing," Gores said in a news conference before the Pistons won their second straight game, 92-87. "I think we are making tremendous progress. I expect this team to be a championship team. This is why we are here."

Jodie Meeks suffers broken foot in Pistons' win over Jazz
AUBURN HILLS -- Jodie Meeks can't seem to shake the early season injury bug in his Detroit Pistons tenure.
The backup shooting guard left Wednesday's 92-87 win over the Utah Jazz in the second quarter with an injury to his right foot. He never returned, and after coach Stan Van Gundy said X-rays showed a Jones fracture.
In other words, he has a broken foot.
"We'll get further assessment and know better on a timetable in the next couple of days," Van Gundy said. "But they, they X-rayed him, he's got a Jones fracture."

Really, really interesting Pistons article....didn't know most of this.
Pistons leaving no game unwatched in hopes of uncovering the NBA's secrets
Pistons leaving no game unwatched in hopes of uncovering the NBA's secrets
There will be 1,230 NBA games this season. The Detroit Pistons want to watch every one.
The Pistons have four pro scouts, and that’s their job: Watch basketball. A lot of basketball. Two or three games a day, all season. Last year, they watched between 90-95% of NBA games, and for each one, they evaluated every player in the game in several categories, and entered their scouting reports into the team’s database. The Pistons want to know everything relevant about every player in the league—and really, about every NBA-quality player in the world.
It’s an enormous and unprecedented effort that could change how business is done in the NBA.
You know… if it works.
In the spring of 2014, Stan Van Gundy pulled out of the Golden State Warriors’ coaching search to take full control of the Pistons. Outsiders tend to look at these jobs simply as vehicles for winning games, and by that standard, Van Gundy made a mistake. The Warriors have already won a championship. Nobody knows if they would have won it with Van Gundy coaching instead of Steve Kerr, but they would have had a great shot. Just about everybody in the NBA agrees Van Gundy is a terrific coach.
But after a Pistons practice recently, Van Gundy insisted, “If I had it to do over again, this is where I’d want to be.” He has a chance to do something that very few coaches ever get to do: Build an organization as he pleases. The Pistons’ owner, Tom Gores, has given him the budget and authority to do it.

I love all the walvies who were pissed the Pistons took KCP over Burke...Burke will be out of the league in a few years and KCP seems like he's coming along quite nicely.
Also, the Pistons have a terrible logo. I know, I know.

It's really just an updated version of this.. I don't mind the Pistons' brand overall. The blue and red fits nicely and the jerseys look good plus there is some history behind it with the run we had in the mid 2000s. Don't want them to change anything.

Make it a fracture of his fifth metatarsal for Jodie Meeks. A 12-16 week time frame means a March return possible.

3-0 Pistons say only minor tweaks needed
Auburn Hills — The Pistons saw many of their offensive woes on video Sunday.
The problems are not major but they are preventing the team from exploding offensively. Maybe it was a player in the wrong spot. Maybe the group wasn’t spaced the right way or in the right alignment.
Sometimes it was two or three guys wanting to do the right thing but too often doing the same things. The Pistons walked away feeling they need minor tweaks to better their offense, not a major overhaul.
The newest version of the “Going to Work” Pistons of the early 2000’s is surviving through defense, rebounding and good old-fashioned hustle. That’s how they became the first to go 3-0 in the NBA. And they’re drawing attention from slumbering fans.

Drummond can't save Pistons as bench goes belly-up
The Pistons could no longer breathe and lost hope of winning during a brief but deadly 7:56 stretch of the first half when the Pacers scored 22 straight points. The reserves surrendered a 30-22 lead and trailed by 44-30 when Van Gundy disgustedly removed them from the game.
The Pistons' bench finally scored when Spencer Dinwiddie hit a layup with 10:15 remaining in the game.
