Why is Izzo not in the Basketball Hall of Fame
Coach: A coach must be either fully retired for five years or, if still an active coach, have coached as either a fulltime assistant or head coach on the high school and/or college and/or professional level for a minimum of 25 years. That person will then be considered for Enshrinement in the sixth year of retirement or 26th year of active coaching. wrote:
If some sleaze like coach Cal is in, why isn't Izzo? Apparently the nominates packets are submitted to the Hall each November 1st. I hope someone is doing this for coach EVERY FUCKING YEAR.
Maybe one of us should put it together before Sunday?

I always thought it was because he didn't have the 25 years.

Maybe, but when did he become a full time assistance, and is that any assistant or assistant HC? This could be the first year he's hit the requirements. When was he promoted? 1990? anything later than that and he still doesn't have the 25 years.CheesySpartan wrote:InTenSity wrote:I always thought it was because he didn't have the 25 years.

Considering Calipari was still a point guard in college while Izzo was an assistant up at Northern Michigan, Izzo must have enough service time to count for the 25 years.

Re: Why is Izzo not in the Basketball Hall of Fame
He has 20 years as HC, as of last year. 5 years before that as assistant HC. I dunno, maybe this is the first year that counts. Maybe this is his 26th year.Wikipedia wrote:After a short two-month stay in 1986 as an assistant coach at University of Tulsa, Izzo returned to Michigan State when assistant Mike Deane left to become head coach at Siena College. Prior to the 1990–91 season, then-current coach Jud Heathcote elevated Izzo to associate head coach. After Heathcote's retirement following the 1994-95 season and upon both his and the Michigan State Athletic Director's recommendation, Izzo was named the new head coach of men's basketball for MSU.[5]

I think the committee should consider an exception to policy for someone like Izzo..
