Anastos and Kelly Miller on staff. Seems like they could recruit and maybe win some games.

Re: Fire Anastos !!
The Anastos experiment should end. Probably time for Tom Newton to be kicked upstairs as well.
About 2 years ago I heard WMU's Andy Murray talking about the challenges of recruiting since the WHL changed their draft to make 15 year olds eligible and the CHL drafts 16 year olds with special exemptions for "exceptional" players. Right now players who sign with the Juniors lose NCAA eligibility but they can play college hockey in Canada in their university system. Murray is no bumpkin. He's coached in the Canadian univeristy system and has 20 years as an NHL coach.
WHL draft eligible players are from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
OHL can draft players from Ontario, as well as from the U.S. states Michigan, Pennsylvania and New York, and a few other designated U.S. states east of the Mississippi River.
The QMJHL draft age is 16 like the OHL draft and their draft area is Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, as well as the U.S. region of New England, which includes Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
(all info from link)
Back in the day Mason would turn Shawn Walsh and Terry Christensen loose to Western Canada and they got a lot of great players like Craig Simpson but they weren't getting drafted at 15 then either.
MSU needs to find a coach who can navigate the new rules to get players to compete in the new rules of the WHL. It would probably help if Hollis and other AD's would petition the NCAA to adapt the Canadian rules that would make drafted players eligible for 4 years of eligibility with an age cut off of 23.

I've wanted Anastos gone for awhile, but I am thankful he convinced Hollis to bring back the classic hockey script. Now hopefully Hollis can bring in a coach that can combine the script with the classic winning that MSU hockey used to do, too.

Nigel, fyi, repeating jokes again and again, and again doesnt make them funny. In fact, the exact opposite. Even good ones. Except yours wasn't good.

Re: Fire Anastos !!
Unless Anastos has a secret friend and/or unflattering photos of Mark Hollis like some think MSU's train wreck softball coach has in her possession, this could be Anastos last season.
Here's a starting list of replacement candidates with an MSU bias.
Danton Cole: age 48 / HC experience with Alabama Huntsville, GR Griffins, Muskegon Lumberjacks currently U17 coach with US Hockey in aa
Newell Brown: age 53 / 2 years HC experience at MI Tech, 4 years HC experience Adorondak Red Wings, 3 year asst at MSU and 19 years as NHL asst with 5 teams currently asst with NHL Phoenix.
George Gwozdecky: age 62 / college asst 8 years (5@MSU), HC @ Miami 5 years, HC @ Denver 19 years, 3 year asst with NHL Tampa Bay, currently HC at Valor Christisn HS in Colorado.
Anastos is making $235K-$240K per season with is about middle to high end of NHL assistants. Other college hockey coaches are in the $225K-$300K range.
With the money football and basketball are generating Hollis has the budget to offer a coach $250K - $300K to get a quality coach with HC experience.

Re: Fire Anastos !!
MSU needs to do better than Anastos who was an experiment when it came to coaching experience.
The list was a start with an admitted MSU bias.
Until the recent past MSU hasn't had a lot of experience hiring hockey coaches. Amo was at MTU for 2 or 3 seasons and MSU for 32 seasons. Mason took over from Amo and he stayed 22 years before leaving to be AD. There aren't a lot of places that have 2 coaches for over 50 seasons since WW2 at a school in a major conference.
Mason got to choose his successor and the 2nd successor. My opinion is he has run out the strong.
Mason had 8-9 years as a HC at LSSU for 4 seasons and and 4-5 more at BGSU when MSU hired him with zero previous connection to MSU.
I don't think an MSU connection is critical but they need to hire an SOB who can coach and hire some assistants who can recruit like their ass is on fire.

Seriously, why hasn't MSU announced this yet? Is Hollis still depressed about the MTSU loss and not doing anything? Wisconsin already let go of Eaves. C'mon, let's get this ball rolling.

Taking the Illinois approach. He will be fired two weeks before the season starts.

Give it two or three weeks. Once its Frozen Four weekend, if a decision has been made to replace Anastos, there will be plenty of time for an MSU search agent to talk to coaches agents to see who's interested.
If nothing happens after the Frozen Four Anastos will have hung on again

I saw the last third of the season and its sad how the mighty have fallen.
Its the hockey equivalent to Muddy Waters or Bobby Williams in football except they didn't get extensions to let them stay for 5+ seasons.
Good news is with the announcement that ND is joining the Big Ten Hockey conference, the MSU job becomes a bit more attractive. I personally hope Hollis has started a back channel search because the 5 year trend hasn't been good.

Michigan State Officially Gives Up, Keeps Tom Anastos
On the same day Wisconsin announced a dynamite new coaching staff with a former head coach and one of the respected recruiters in college hockey as an assistant coach, Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis announced that he really doesn't give a shit about Michigan State's hockey program, and that Tom Anastos will return as their head coach.

Serious question: Is this about money? In other words, would Hollis rather sink most everything into FB and BB, generate revenue through FB and BB that pays for everything else, but let other programs sink or swim on their own?

It almost seems that way, doesn't it? If it wasn't for Drayton McLane's money, I wonder what the baseball program would like right now. So, where are the hockey benefactors? Maybe Hollis should be leaning on the likes of Tory Krug and drum up some dough.

Re: Fire Anastos !!
It is rather unfortunate. I know it is a regional sport, but having a good hockey program is a big deal in these parts. Just like having a good baseball team is a big deal in the Southeast. It says a lot about MSU athletics - that it still has a ways to go - if it has to be a two sport school in terms of resources.
