90's Alt Rock
tl;dr - gHost's thread about Mellon Collie got me a bit nostalgic for some 90's rock so I felt like compiling a list of my favorite bands and one or two of their best songs from that era (probably live versions unless the band absolutely sucked live). Feel free to add any of your favorite 90's rock bands or songs from bands I've included that you feel are better, if ya want.. I listened to 92.1 The Edge and Buzz 95 pretty much exclusively... so the bands I list are going to be the mainstream ones, for the most part...
1. Nirvana, we'll just get them out of the way...
2. Pearl Jam
3. Soundgarden
4. Oasis
5. R.E.M.
6. Smashing Pumpkins
7. Alanis Morisette (don't judge me)
8. Nine Inch Nails
9. Tool
10. Bush
11. Alice In Chains (Lansing, Dollar Salloon, 1991)
12. Green Day
13. Radiohead
14. Red Hot Chili Peppers
15. The Offspring
16. Goo Goo Dolls
17. Stone Temple Pilots
18. Counting Crows
19. Sonic Youth
20. The Black Crowes
21. Silverchair
22. Foo Fighters
23. Mazzy Star
24. Third Eye Blind
25. Collective Soul
26. Live
27. Gin Blossoms
28. Filter
29. Swervedriver
30. Better Than Ezra
31. Our Lady Peace
Time for me to go... I've left out a lot of quality bands....

You can all flog me for this, but the 90s were my 2nd least favorite era. I'd put grunge right behind disco in listening pleasure.

Can't hate anybody for their musical tastes. We all like what our brain says we like.

The current era of music is a treasure trove of trash. Definitely will end up #1 in regards to all time suck.

Re: 90's Alt Rock
While there was some awesome music in the 90's, there was a lot of crap too.
Gin Blossoms, Collective Soul, Candlebox, Goo Goo Dolls, etc were all just copying everyone else and repackaging it in a radio friendly alt-rock format aimed at selling as many CD's as possible.
At least with musicians today, they have to try and find another hook that isn't rooted in record sales.
Speaking of Hook, anyone else here a fan of Blues Traveler? They, were awesome. The amount of airplay that "runaround" got was unfortunate though.

I'm going to assume you mean pop music. And with a few rare exceptions, I agree with you. However, music is blossoming in the digital age like it never has before. There is a lot of innovative and just plain good stuff out there from all over the world right now. Totally accessible because you don't have to go to a store to get it anymore.
Check out all songs considered sometime.
Here's a link to hundreds of free songs from mostly newer artists. It's mostly really good stuff too.

I agree with all of this. I was about to bag on the OP for including collective soul and the Goo Goo Dolls in with some other incredible bands. I also enjoyed Blues Traveler and a lot of the new age Hippie bands of the early to mid 90's (see also Rusted Root).
One of my favorite 90's bands that did not get enough pub was Morphine. Those guys were great.

Re: 90's Alt Rock
It happens.
I dug the Goo Goo Dolls first album, especially the one I posted which was in the Angus soundtrack.
I really just wanted to paint a picture of a time when all of those bands were defining the era. I obviously forgot to post a lot of really good bands.
I was given shit in another thread regarding the Smashing Pumpkins... which is something I'm still confused with, but it is what it is...

I was gonna put The Presidents Of The United States of America in there too but I thought I'd really annoy some people.

I still play my original CD from time to time.
I find myself listening to bands and songs I've never really liked (Alanis Morrisette for one) simply for the nostalgia...

I did buy Jagged Little Pill when I was in the Navy, mainly because I had the hots for Alanis. I think that record sucks fat ass now.

Oh boy, Alanis certainly was a hottie. I've had a boner or two for her in my time. I'm not even sure why I included her, now, to be honest. She's top 40... but she seems to fit in there in some way I can't articulate. Maybe I'm just thinking with the boner, though.

The Cult fucking rock. I really dig their sound. I would have definitely included them if more of their success was in the 90's. Same reason I didn't include U2 (even though they've always enjoyed success no matter which decade).

I always forget that the world generally sees Blind Melon as a one hit wonder. I was real into them so I never saw them that way. Went to their show at St. Andrews about a month before Hoon died. They were a great band. It's too bad they didn't get to make more music.
