Wings prospects set for high-caliber tournament

But there’s another tournament that could be interesting — the eight-team prospects tournament that begins Friday in Traverse City.

“In terms of the competition, it’s of the highest caliber these young players will face,” said Ryan Martin, assistant general manager for the Red Wings.

How good could this tournament be?

More than 500 participants who have played in the tournament have gone on to play at least one game in the NHL, including 24 who skated for the Red Wings in the 2015-16 NHL season.

The Red Wings roster is highlighted by five recent first- or second-round picks — forwards Evgeny Svechnikov (2015, first), Tyler Bertuzzi (2013, second), Zach Nastasiuk (2013, second), Givani Smith (2016, second) and defenseman Filip Hronek (2016, second).

Red Wings' Dylan Larkin: Playing center 'whole new challenge'

TRAVERSE CITY – The Detroit Red Wings have iced some of the best two-way centers in hockey over the past 30 years, from Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov to Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.

But the latest era of greatness down the middle is winding down, with Datsyuk having returned to Russia and Zetterberg in the twilight of his career.

This organization desperately needs someone to carry the mantle and is counting on Dylan Larkin to eventually grow into that role. At age 20, he might not settle into that spot for a few years. But they're going to give it a try at the start of the season by moving him from wing to center.

"It's a whole new challenge," Larkin said. "It's kind of owning a line. You look at a guy like Henrik Zetterberg, he controls that line. If Z's not on that night, it's going to be tough on other players.

Will Red Wings make run at Jacob Trouba?

Traverse City – The Red Wings continue to search for a defenseman, preferably one with a right-handed shot and who has his best hockey is ahead of him.

One appears to be on the market.

Rochester native Jacob Trouba – who starred at Michigan – told the Winnipeg Jets over the weekend he wants out.

Trouba, 22, a restricted free agent, thinks he’s been crowded out on the Jets, who already have Dustin Byfuglien and Tyler Myers on defense.

“Our client, Jacob Trouba, will not be attending the Winnipeg Jets NHL training camp,” said Kurt Overhardt, Trouba’s agent, in a statement. “Since May, we have been working with the Jets management in an effort to facilitate a trade of Jacob’s rights. Both parties continue to work on this matter.

“Our client has nothing but respect for the people and City of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Jets, its fans, management and ownership – our desire to get him moved has everything to do with opportunity. We will continue to work with the Jets in good faith to achieve this end.”

The Red Wings would relish a 6-foot-3, 200-pound all-around defenseman who had six goals and 21 points, along with 62 penalty minutes while playing over 20 minutes per game.
